Geoffrey Chaucer was born about 1343 in London, the son of a rich wine merchant. His surname derives from the French ''Chaucier'', which means shoemaker. He was placed among a group of young man and women serving in that royal household to advance their careers, and it meant also that he had to leave his family to work as a knight. At the age of 17 years old, Geoffrey followed Edward III's son to war in France, where he was taken prisoner by the king. After Chaucer’s release, he joined the Royal Service, traveling throughout France, Spain and Italy on diplomatic missions; his travel dured 10 years and he met Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio.
