Today I analysed the assignment briefs of the new unit, we were put into groups and created a mind map with detailed information on the processes involved in the production of the e-book.

I then used the information from the brief and the mind map to create a project proposal detailing what I'm going to be achieving in my project. I also started to solve photoshop problems through tutorials by finding problems which i couldn't understand how to fix then i would look at a tutorial and copy the way they fixed the problems.

I learnt a few photoshop techniques through Hannah's tutorial. I found problems in work management but i sorted it out by sharing work between the group.

I need to improve and develop my understanding of children's book designs so that my e-book has the right features to attract young children.

The next action will be completing the necessary research which is needed for target audience and barriers and solutions, i can complete this by researching different publishing companies.

1. I looked through Google for a sufficient picture that would look good as a children's book page.

2.I put the image on photoshop and made it the international paper size. I also changed the dimensions of the image by making it landscape.

3. I began to fill in the fore ground of my image by using the rectangular selection tool which then I used the colour pallet to make a darker blue so that the white ice shows up against the water more effectively. I used opacity to actually make the water blue.

4. I then changed the colour of the sky by reversing the selection area and made the Skye a lighter tone, this was a problem with reversing the selection at first but after looking at tutorials I found I could do it.

5. I then began using the magnetic selection tool to cut round the icebergs in the fore ground although while doing this I found problems with making the image look jagged but when I changed the colour the icebergs looked right.

6. I wanted to add a penguin into my image but I found that cutting around the image wit the magnetic selection tool caused the picture to come out jagged, therefore I thought it would be easier to find an image of penguin that had already been cut out.

(Screen shots won't upload)

The most important information and data i gathered from my Focus group was the likes and dislikes , as it gave me a detailed insight into what people had an interest in when they were younger. Most importantly it showed me what not to involve in my children's book like spirits and ghosts, these things scared them when they were younger. I used this data to develop my e-books character and design in order to work on the feedback received. I also collected children's books which i could use for input and gather more information on the strutter and writing frame of children's literature, to do this i had to beta library card in order to take the books - this took a long time as the entire group had to get library cards. After taking the books back i began to read through them, taking pictures to enhance my research and evidencing my working - i uploaded these images to my mind map/mood board. I think i could have improved the mind map i did by going into more detail; instead of doing a mind map i think it would have been smarter to create separate word documents as i didn't have enough space to write down what i wanted.

In the lesson we were sourcing other e-books and looking at what qualities we could take from them and develop into our own books and stories. This research was crucial as it gave us a insight into what's on the market already as well as information which could improve our existing ideas like the sound effects for each page , movement and animation on the page and the meaning of the story. Some e-books we found were not up to the standards we expected , we then as a class dissected what elements made the book this way and how we would change it for example one book in particular showed issues involving eating disorders as the text and story board of the book hadn't been layer out or considered properly. After the market research we began to think about characters and which characters from childhood shoes stuck in our heads as this is the type of response we want from our audience.

We used photoshop to start editing some of the images we drew in the session before although there were some problems I came across which were that I had difficultly filling areas due to breaks in the lines next time I would use a fine liner instead of pencil to make the lines bolder and darker so that the software will work. I successfully put animals fur onto the bat by making another tab , selecting with the rectangular selection tool , then pulling this into the tab with the image, then finally using the opacity scale to put it on the bat. Next time I use photoshop I will use image duplicate because this means I can see the difference between the sketch and the furthered ideas.

(images at college , have not been in because of absence)

We started to plan our scripts by merging ideas each of us had created, this came out as a finished story board of ideas. We then looked at dialogue for each scene and what would happen in each scene, we decided on 8 pages/scenes as this is not time consuming to animate and can be achieved in the time period we have been given. After this we started to write the introduction of our personal scripts and then we started making the first initial scene using a variety of mediums like pastels , biro and other creative bits. I believe mine came out looking quite professional, I have decided that I want to do a biro based illustrations with some areas coloured in which are important to the story like the rocket and characters.

We started to establish a schedule by laying out the amount of time it would take to complete each task for example 2 back grounds = 2 hours. This was helpful as it gave us a good judgement of our own work speed. I created two space grounds for the e-book which took more time than expected because of complications in design and software. I also created the concept ideas for "Rory the Rover" , a character in our e-book this was difficult as I had to find robots which fitted the style of the children book, when I found the right images I started to draw and create the character. We were taught the basics of animation by Dave, using a tutorial to guide us. The aim of the activity was to recreate the duck and pond animation from the tutorial as well as to learn final cut x more. I found the task fairly easy after some assistance. For the task we had to make the duck move into the middle of the screen/pond while the view became larger bring the the picture closer (scaling up) , while the view changed and the duck moved, the reeds at the edge of the screen moved out of view.

I first started off the production day with a minutes meeting/agenda to work out and schedule what my group and I were doing in the session. Luckily we has already created the production schedule which has completed and outstanding work on it - highlighted in green and red with the amount of hours needed for completion. My first task was to create the music for the opening theme tune, the entire concept of this I found difficult as I don't have much musical talent or experience so I decided to go and research other children's theme music and look at base note and tune structures although there weren't any tutorials or advice sections for this. I decided I was ready for production so I opened garage band and I began experimenting with different styles of music, the problems I encountered were: style of music, instrument choice, recording and volume level. I had difficulties picking a style of music but after consideration I picked a classical style using bass and cellos to create this light hearted song. I solved my volume difficulties by trial and error and searching.

The next task I completed was the sound effects for the characters and scenes with my group and our voice actor, this went extremely well as we created all the sounds for each of the scenes. The main problem we encountered was the actual creation of the foley sound we wanted this was so difficult and had us scrounging around the animation studio looking for pieces of metal and scrap to make sound. We sat for a bout 10 minutes looking around and discussing what we needed , luckily we managed to create sound effects for every part.

My problem solving skills this session were good as I had to apply them to every task in order to complete them, I solved the issues fast which allowed me to move on in my studies/production.

Target description-
Complete opening scene (fully animated, music, sound, dialogue) : I chose this target as it would put my group in a good position to complete the e-book before the deadline leaving more time improve our finished book.

Start on scene 1, as this will further the completion of our production schedule. Mainly animation and not adding sound files yet except from the narrator (jacks) audio.

Problems-
I was having difficulties when animating, I wanted the trees to part and go off screen as the mountain became enlarged but I couldn't get the timing or positioning right meaning I spent a long time resetting and retrying to set the right point of the key frames.

I had another problem trying to adjust the sound audio and length when inporting it into Final Cut X.

Problems solved-
I looked at tutorials on the Internet to fix my key frame problems although trial and error helped alot . Eventually I had the correct positioning and time for the trees moving off screen and the mountain scaling up as the trees parted.

I found the right tools to extend and adjust the sound of the audio in the first opening scene. They were in the top left corner of Final Cut Pro X or you can control right click and it brings up a options area.

Conclusion/overview-

I didn't come across many problems while animating and therefore my problem solving skills weren't greatly involved in last sessions work as the I had majority of the skills retained from sessions before hand.
