I think the message behind the poem is really powerful, saying that no one but you can control your life and what you do with it. It's powerful because of this, and because the history of South Africa and Apartheid. The poem is inspiring to anyone who is having trouble in their life from another person because the message is saying that you are in control.

I think it is really important, as this poem suggests, not to let outside circumstances of conflicts reduce your determination. A line that impacted me was "Under the bludgeonings of chance / My head is bloody, but unbowed." I think this is an interesting line because it shows that the Henley isn't claiming that narrator is invincible -- he is clearly hurt, but he is just refusing to let this break his will. It's really important to keep standing even in the face of pain and trouble, because life goes on.

The last two lines of the poem by Henley are by far the most powerful. To fully take charge of your life is a battle. Through stress, pain, doubt, and loss, life may feel like a tidal wave is continually crashing against you, pulling you underwater. It takes immense strength to proclaim that you are the captain of your soul.

My favorite stanza is the last because the poem turns from mostly cold and unforgiving to stronger and more powerful than any of the previous declarations.

This poem seems to speak of how no outside force can control one's fate or soul. The only one who can control one's own fate and soul is the person them self, no matter how hard external forces try to force that change. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to make the decision to change; they take influence from these outside forces.

I like how the last stanza emphasizes that ultimately, we are the ones who control what happens in our lives. We make our own decisions and choices, and we should not let others make our choices for us. It comes down to what we decide is best for us. Our life experiences shape and mold us, and they can influence our decisions, but what happens is up to you.

It means that one can only control their own future-the outside world can influence how an individual reacts but not how they go about getting past it. It requires determination and perseverance to get past hardships.

This is definitely a very powerful poem. I think that it is suggesting that no matter how difficult a situation may be, it is always important to keep your head held high. You ultimately choose what things you allow and what things you do not allow to affect you, and the last stanza in the poem, I think, reinforces this idea. Even though it has a dark type of tone, it has a positive message of determination.

"I am the master of my fate" is the most important section in this excerpt of the poem. One is in control of all actions completed, one need not be influenced by outside sources. Whatever someone wants to do, they should do it, regardless of whether society shuns is as unacceptable. If it is not a positive activity, they will be reprimanded accordingly and will then decide to do something else. Life is all about being happy and doing what one loves; there is no reason to do something for the rest of one's life to thrive in social norms.

It is ideal for us to say we are the masters of our fate and the captains of our souls, but when faced with reality, most of us shrink into our previous excuses of human nature. I truly think that if everyone was accountable to this extent and would take responsibility of their being, the world would indeed be a better place.
