Heian Period of Japan

The Heian Period lasted from 794-1185. This period was named after the imperial city Heian since that was when Heian was changed to the capital. People think the period started since the Japanese adopted more of their own culture and less of the Chinese. During the Heian Period, art, literature, and poetry flourished (called the peak of art, literature, and poetry in Japan). 2 new Japanese scripts arose which had a cursive and distinctive alphabet (Katakana and Hiragana). Although the Imperial House of Japan looked like they had power, the real rulers were the Fujiwara clan. This family intermarried with the imperial family and made some of the emperors. Eventually in 1185, the Fujiwara clan lost power and rival warlords took control to make a shogunate.

Muromachi Period of Japan

The Muromachi Period was started in 1336 and ended in 1573 in Kyoto. This period was when the Muromachi started to govern the shogunate. The first established shogun of the Muromachi was Ashikaga Takauji and last (15th) shogun was Ashikaga Yoshiaki. Later, there was a dispute within the Ashikaga causing the Onin War that basically tore Japan apart. Since the shogun had barely any authority anymore, daimyos were looking for power. Besides the war, Japan had a lot of cultural growth due to Zen Buddhism. Arts of tea ceremonies and flower arrangment were developed and sumi (Sung ink painting style) reached peak. The muromachi period came to an end when Oda Nobunaga drove out Ashikaga Yoshiaki in 1573.

Oda Nobunaga's Rule

Oda Nobunaga was a daimyo that deposed the Ashigawa clan. His goal was to unify all of Japan but that was completed later by his successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. A religious sect called Ikko went against Nobunaga by trying to bring back up Yoshiaki and also getting loyalty of local lords. Nobunaga fought the Ikko more over 10 years and finally won in 1580 when the Ikko decided to surrender. Nobunaga conquered central Japan by 1582 and was trying to go western. In that year, in Honno Temple in Kyoto, his vassal, Akechi Mitsuhide attacked him. Since he had no survival chance, he committed seppuku (suicide for dishonored) on June 21, 1582. Oda Nobnaga's reign lasted from 1568 to 1582.
