As economies and populations grow, the number of kilometer's driven and congestion within our traffic network's rises. Although some people in the big urban centers are showing less attachment to vehicle ownership than in decades in the past, the overall trend is towards rising emissions.

Sustainable transportation refers to any mode of transportation that is 'green' with low impact on the environment. It is also about balancing current and future needs. Some examples include walking, cycling, public transit, carpooling, ride sharing, and green vehicles.

Many densely populated cities, towns, and regions are beginning to invest more money into infrastructure for public transit and other active transportation facilities due to public demand. Other locations have gone as far to implement a 'congestion tax' for certain segments of highly traveled roadway. This prompts drivers to either pay a steep fee or carpool. This, or the other option of using public transit or an active mode of transportation.

Numerous examples of sustainable transportation exist all over the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), from the continually updated pedestrian, cycling, and public transit networks, additional bike lanes being added to major roads, construction of the many ongoing Light-Rail-Transit (LRT) projects, and even the addition of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes to some of our freeways.

Transportation networks are vital to the cities and rural communities in Canada, as it is necessary to connect us all to one-another. Increasing populations and individual automobile ownership is slowly making us realize that the current network will not be a sustainable one, even in as little as 10-15 years if trends continue at the same rate. The need for a transportation modal shift is necessary.
