Le lin et ses propriétés

Linum usitatissimum est une plante très rustique,  très facile à cultiver. C'est une plante herbacée à tiges fibreuses se ramifiant , qui se trouve surtout dans les régions tempérées et subtropicales de l'hémisphère nord.  Ses fleurs sont tellement légères qu’elles se déplacent au moindre souffle du vent pendant tout l’été. Elles ont 5 pétales bleu clair, sont en entonnoir et mesurent 2 à 3 cm de diamètre. . Mais elles se fanent dans la journée !

Le berceau de sa domestication reste encore incertain mais c’est sous l'Égypte des pharaons que l’usage du lin a commencé à se développer : sa production, attestée il y a plus de 6 000 ans, servait à confectionner vêtements, tissus funéraires, voiles de bateaux, cordages ou filets. Les graines étaient consommées pour leurs qualités nutritives4.
La culture du lin a ensuite essaimé de proche en proche au cours de l’époque néolithique, jusqu’à l’Europe, grâce aux navigateurs phéniciens.
En France, les Gaulois auraient cultivé le lin dans la vallée de la Lys bien avant la conquête des Gaules par Jules César5. Le lin a été introduit par Charlemagne - il fait partie des plantes dont la culture est recommandée dans les domaines royaux dans le capitulaire De Villis (fin du viiie ou début du ixe siècle) - et c’est à partir du xie siècle que son utilisation s’est généralisée. La Tapisserie de Bayeux est l’exemple le plus célèbre de la présence du lin à cette époque.
