Business performance management is a set of performance management and analytic processes that enables the management of an organization's performance to achieve one or more pre-selected goals. Synonyms for "business performance management" include "corporate performance management (CPM)"[1] and "enterprise performance management".[2][3]Business performance management is contained within approaches to business process management.[4]Business performance management has three main activities:selection of goals, consolidation of measurement information relevant to an organization’s progress against these goals, andinterventions made by managers in light of this information with a view to improving future performance against these goals.Although presented here sequentially, typically all three activities will run concurrently, with interventions by managers affecting the choice of goals, the measurement information monitored, and the activities being undertaken by the organization.Because business performance management activities in large organizations often involve the collation and reporting of large volumes of data, many software vendors, particularly those offering business intelligence tools, market products intended to assist in this process. As a result of this marketing effort, business performance management is often incorrectly understood as an activity that necessarily relies on software systems to work, and many definitions of business performance management explicitly suggest software as being a definitive component of the approach.[5]This interest in business performance management from the software community is sales-driven[citation needed] - "The biggest growth area in operational BI analysis is in the area of business performance management."[6]Since 1992, business performance management has been strongly influenced by the rise of the balanced scorecard framework. It is common for managers to use the balanced scorecard framework to clarify the goals of an organization, to identify how to track them, and to structure the mechanisms by which interventions will be triggered. These steps are the same as those that are found in BPM, and as a result balanced scorecard is often used as the basis for business performance management activity with organizations.[citation needed]In the past, owners have sought to drive strategy down and across their organizations, transform these strategies into actionable metrics and use analytics to expose the cause-and-effect relationships that, if understood, could give insight into decision-making.Contents [hide] 1	History2	Definition and scope3	Frameworks4	Metrics and key performance indicators5	Application software types6	Design and implementation7	See also8	References9	Further reading10	External linksHistory[edit]Reference to non-business performance management occurs[citation needed] in Sun Tzu's The Art of War. Sun Tzu claims that to succeed in war, one should have full knowledge of one's own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of one's enemies. Lack of either set of knowledge might result in defeat.[7] Parallels between the challenges in business and those of war include[citation needed]:collecting data - both internal and externaldiscerning patterns and meaning in the data (analyzing)responding to the resultant informationPrior to the start of the Information Age in the late 20th century, businesses sometimes took the trouble to laboriously collect data from non-automated sources. As they lacked computing resources to properly analyze the data, they often made commercial decisions primarily on the basis of intuition. As businesses started automating more and more systems, more and more data became available. However, collection often remained a challenge due to a lack of infrastructure for data exchange or due to incompatibilities between systems. Reports on the data gathered sometimes took months to generate. Such reports allowed informed long-term strategic decision-making. However, short-term tactical decision-making often continued to rely on intuition. In 1989 Howard Dresner, a research analyst at Gartner, popularized "business intelligence" (BI) as an umbrella term to describe a set of concepts and methods to improve business decision-making by using fact-based support systems. Performance management builds on a foundation of BI, but marries it to the planning-and-control cycle of the enterprise - with enterprise planning, consolidation and modeling capabilities.Increasing standards, automation, and technologies have led to vast amounts of data becoming available. Data warehouse technologies have allowed the building of repositories to store this data. Improved ETL and enterprise application integration tools have increased the timely collecting of data. OLAP reporting technologies have allowed faster generation of new reports which analyze the data. As of 2010, business intelligence has become the art of sieving through large amounts of data, extracting useful information and turning that information into actionable knowledge.[citation needed]Definition and scope[edit]Business performance management consists of a set of management and analytic processes, supported by technology, that enable businesses to define strategic goals and then measure and manage performance against those goals. Core business performance management processes include financial planning, operational planning, business modeling, consolidation and reporting, analysis, and monitoring of key performance indicators linked to strategy.Business performance management involves consolidation of data from various sources, querying, and analysis of the data, and putting the results into practice.Frameworks[edit]Various frameworks for implementing business performance management exist. The discipline gives companies a top-down framework by which to align planning and execution, strategy and tactics, and business-unit and enterprise objectives. Reactions may include the Six Sigma strategy, balanced scorecard, activity-based costing (ABC), Objectives and Key Results (OKR), Total Quality Management, economic value-add, integrated strategic measurement and Theory of Constraints. The balanced scorecard is the most widely adopted[citation needed] performance management framework.Metrics and key performance indicators[edit]Some of the areas from which bank management may gain knowledge by using business performance management include:customer-related numbers:new customers acquiredstatus of existing customersattrition of customers (including breakup by reason for attrition)turnover generated by segments of the customers - possibly using demographic filtersoutstanding balances held by segments of customers and terms of payment - possibly using demographic filterscollection of bad debts within customer relationshipsdemographic analysis of individuals (potential customers) applying to become customers, and the levels of approval, rejections and pending numbersdelinquency analysis of customers behind on paymentsprofitability of customers by demographic segments and segmentation of customers by profitabilitycampaign managementreal-time dashboard on key operational metricsoverall equipment effectivenessclickstream analysis on a websitekey product portfolio trackersmarketing-channel analysissales-data analysis by product segmentscallcenter metricsThough the above list describes what a bank might monitor, it could refer to a telephone company or to a similar service-sector company.Items of generic importance include:consistent and correct KPI-related data providing insights into operational aspects of a companytimely availability of KPI-related dataKPIs designed to directly reflect the efficiency and effectiveness of a businessinformation presented in a format which aids decision-making for management and decision-makersability to discern patterns or trends from organized informationBusiness performance management integrates the company's processes with CRM or[citation needed] ERP. Companies should become better able to gauge customer satisfaction, control customer trends and influence shareholder value.[citation needed]Application software types[edit]People working in business intelligence have developed tools that ease the work of business performance management, especially when the business-intelligence task involves gathering and analyzing large amounts of unstructured data.Tool categories commonly used for business performance management include:MOLAP — Multidimensional online analytical processing, sometimes simply called "analytics" (based on dimensional analysis and the so-called "hypercube" or "cube")scorecarding, dashboarding and data visualizationdata warehousesdocument warehousestext miningDM — data miningBPO — business performance optimizationEPM — enterprise performance managementEIS — executive information systemsDSS — decision support systemsMIS — management information systemsSEMS — strategic enterprise management softwareEOI — Operational intelligence Enterprise Operational Intelligence SoftwareDesign and implementation[edit]Questions asked when implementing a business performance management program include:Goal-alignment queriesDetermine the short- and medium-term purpose of the program. What strategic goal(s) of the organization will the program address? What organizational mission/vision does it relate to? A hypothesis needs to be crafted that details how this initiative will eventually improve results / performance (i.e. a strategy map).Baseline queriesAssess current information-gathering competency. Does the organization have the capability to monitor important sources of information? What data is being collected and how is it being stored? What are the statistical parameters of this data, e.g., how much random variation does it contain? Is this being measured?Cost and risk queriesEstimate the financial consequences of a new BI initiative. Assess the cost of the present operations and the increase in costs associated with the BPM initiative. What is the risk that the initiative will fail? This risk assessment should be converted into a financial metric and included in the planning.Customer and stakeholder queriesDetermine who will benefit from the initiative and who will pay. Who has a stake in the current procedure? What kinds of customers / stakeholders will benefit directly from this initiative? Who will benefit indirectly? What quantitative / qualitative benefits follow? Is the specified initiative the best or only way to increase satisfaction for all kinds of customers? How will customer benefits be monitored? What about employees, shareholders, and distribution channel members?Metrics-related queriesInformation requirements need operationalization into clearly defined metrics. Decide which metrics to use for each piece of information being gathered. Are these the best metrics and why? How many metrics need to be tracked? If this is a large number (it usually is), what kind of system can track them? Are the metrics standardized, so they can be benchmarked against performance in other organizations? What are the industry standard metrics available?Measurement methodology-related queriesEstablish a methodology or a procedure to determine the best (or acceptable) way of measuring the required metrics. How frequently will data be collected? Are there any industry standards for this? Is this the best way to do the measurements? How do we know that?Results-related queriesMonitor the BPM program to ensure that it meets objectives. The program itself may require adjusting. The program should be tested for accuracy, reliability, and validity. How can it be demonstrated that the BI initiative, and not something else, contributed to a change in results? How much of the change was probably random?See also[edit]Business process managementIntegrated business planningData Presentation ArchitectureList of management topicsElectronic performance support systemsOperational Performance ManagementReferences[edit]Jump up ^ "Introducing the CPM Suites Magic Quadrant", Lee Geishecker and Frank Buytendijk, 2 October 2002, www.gartner.com, M-17-4718Jump up ^ Frolick, Mark N.; Thilini R. I would greatly apprecite it if someone could tell me which of the following sentences are the correct ones, and why:
-"My father was angry because he heard I hadn't come home till 3am." vs. "My father was angry because he had heard I hadn't come home till 3am."
-"We already knew he was coming to visit." vs. "We had already known he was coming to visit." I'll explain one of the pairs of sentences you ask about, and let's see if that helps you. If you want to ask us about another pair of sentences another day, then we can help with you with that, but for comprehensive analysis and practice of this, it might be a good idea to look for an English teacher to speak with.Let's take your first pairs of sentences, about your father being angry. Both are correct and both describe the same event, but suggest a different perspective on it or a different situation. The first sentence could be used in many situations. The second one is a bit more specific because of the past perfect ('had heard'). The past perfect signals that your father heard about your late arrival before the moment in time in which he was angry. This is only logical, of course, but by using the past perfect tense, you make the sequence of him hearing the news and then him getting angry very clear. Your first sentence doesn't specify this sequence. Logic dictates that the sequence had to be this way, and so the sentence is intelligible, but the verb forms themselves do not indicate the sequence in the way that the second sentence does.I hope that makes sense and that it helps you.All the best,
Kirk
The LearnEnglish Team

Log in or register to post comments

hospitalitymanreplied on 2 May, 2017 - 16:12 Russia

PERMALINKHello Learn English!I have a question which has stumped me. Searching your website only confirms my initial thoughts, but some insight would be most appreciated! In short, I came across since with present simple. "How long is it since you phoned your grandmother?" Immediately I told the class it SHOULD read "How long has it been since you phoned your grandmother?" I searched and searched for "since" with present simple, and I found one example of an original text with "How long is it since..." which was copyrighted 1846. Is this an archaic usage, or is it still valid in Britain? The present perfect was used in most cases ('How long is it since you've...') but there were some examples with the past simple, including 'How long is it since the pain started?' and 'How long is it since your man passed away?'One example I came across is probably familiar to you:

How long is it since Saruman bought you?

Best wishes,

Peter

The LearnEnglish Team

Log in or register to post comments

Widescreenreplied on 12 March, 2017 - 14:12 United Kingdom (Great Britain)

PERMALINKHi team,I've got these two sentences which I am not sure which tense to use :
1. Jack was born in 1900. He was influenced by his father who SPENT (or "had spent) years working in England.
SInce this sentence is clearly about the past (story happened in 1900) so past tense " spent" makes sense to me. But if we look at the whole sentence, I also think past perfect "had spent " also makes sense as the act of spend had happended before the act of influence.2. In your first example both the past simple and the past perfect are possible. Which is desired depends upon the context (which we do not have) and the speaker's intention (which we do not know). In general, the past perfect shows some relationship between a past even and an earlier event; the past simple shows simply two completed events in the past. The same is true of the second example. The past pefect may be appropriate if the action being described (living in the house) was related in some way (influenced in some way) another event, either within the sentence or in the broader context. The same is true of the present perfect, but it would need to relate to the present, from the speaker's perspective. Again, this context is not known to us. Best wishes,PeterThe LearnEnglish Team

Case Study: First Reliance Bank

The issue:

First Reliance Bank wanted a performance management system that would enable them,

among other things, to quickly identify core competencies by employee role and allow the

managers to set goals and measure against them in a disciplined, structured setting.

They wanted to use this application to gather pertinent information, conduct employee

evaluations and create a compensation plan that was tied to performance appropriately.

The solution:

First Reliance Bank used Success Factors Performance & Goals solution to more easily

measure and track progress toward employee goals. The company is conducting their

annual performance reviews with supplemental monthly updates on goals and

milestones.

The result:

First Reliance Bank gained a stronger understanding of employees' perception of

individual and group performance, including gaps in communication. This helped the

company to align communication and expectations - and from there, more resourcefully

ascertain and target areas for improvement.

Their employees were more accountable for their performance with the increased

visibility of goals and resources and management had the tools to clearly measure

associates growth and properly allocate compensation based on performance.

"One element that's given us insight into staff performance has been the notes section.

This helps keep track of feedback that comes in about an associate… These notes are

extremely valuable because as time passes, they help us record a history of our people,

our culture and our company.

Successful Workers: 10 Things The Best Employees Do Differently

Every office has employees who are, simply put, more successful than everyone else. Sometimes we love them, sometimes we hate them, but for the most part, we all hope we can be just like them.

Being successful and productive at your job doesn't only make you happier, but it also helps motivate others around you. And while we may get annoyed at employees who seem to have everything go their way, often their success reflects their characteristics.

"There was a time when success was measured by the title you held at work, the size of your home or the make of your car," says Sheryl Connolly, expert on global consumer trends and futuring for Ford Motor Company in Canada. "But it seems society has been moving away from these traditional markers of success and making way for much more individual expressions of success."

Connolly says these days it doesn't matter how much money you have in your bank account (which for most part is still the biggest determinant of success), but rather what makes employees proud or happy, connected to others and the feeling of having work life balance.

While some may argue that a work-life balance does not exist, Connolly says this can be measured by work, play and loving what you do on a personal level.

"Juggling these three balls is easier if you keep in mind that the act of balancing requires constant re-calibration," she says.

Whether you're a full-time worker, part-time worker, intern or a volunteer at an organization, showing initiative and passion for what you do will help you in the long run — from getting a promotion to landing a full-time job.

So what is it that makes successful people stand out? Why does it seem like everything always goes in their favor? Here are Connolly's 10 rules on how to be more successful at what you do.
