Atticus had a less common form of parenting his children. He would make sure the kids were content and happy and if they were he would go no farther. Whenever something was wrong he would immediately help out and solve the problem. He helped teach the kids important lessons and guided them to success. He shared his wisdom by reading with the kids and teaching them important skills early in their life. Atticus is very smart because if his kids are happy he doesn't want to mess that up, some parents in that same situation would interfere and ruin things.

All of these life lessons can be applied to real life.

You should always make ethical decisions no matter what situation you are in. Always make sure you are making the best possible decision before you act. It can sometimes be tempting to make the choice that benefits you the most but that is not always the right choice.

There are many times in life when you must bend the rules. The rules do not apply to every single possible situation that could ever occur, they only apply as a general guideline. For example, a general rule in life is to never lie. In some situations it is important to lie so that someone else's life can be better, take into account parents, they tell their kids about a magical figure named Santa, this is a lie but the kids love it and it makes their lives better.

The final, and most important life lesson is empathy. It is very important to think about what other people are feeling and take that into consideration when making decisions. Everybody has different lives and feelings, there are many things that we can say that might hurt their feelings. Think about how they feel and how what you are going to say will make the feel before you say something.

There can be exceptions based on the circumstances, and you have to think about your decisions before you make them. As long as you are thoughtful and observant, your decisions will positively impact the world around you.

Scout and Jem are kids and they love to play outside. They will occasionally snag a fruit off of the neighbor's tree or in Scout's case, take some gum from a hole in the tree. Taking money from that tree is different, this money has actual worth to someone. The kids don't want to take something that someone cares about but they also don't want someone else to get it. They make an ethical decision and choose to try and find the owner when school starts again. It is important to thoroughly assess a situation so that you can make an ethical decision.

Atticus teaches Scout an important life lesson with this conversation. There are a lot of rules in the world and if everyone followed these rules, life would not be what it is supposed to be. For example, if Dill and Jem had strictly followed Atticus' rules during the summer, they wouldn't have had a lot of fun playing the Radley performance. Sometimes it is better to bend the rules when it is necessary.

There are many situations where the community knows something that an outsider doesn't. It is important to take into consideration how an outsider feels, they might not know what the community knows and it is important to inform them. For example, if a family member just married someone else and they invite them to family game night, they won't know the traditions. If your family has special rules for a game or even a game of your own you should tell the new family member so they don't feel left out.
