Gaming addiction, also viewed as gaming disorder by WHO ( Dean, 2020, p.14), is termed as a persistent behavior that is highly dependent on games and quite difficult to withdraw. This essay will firstly argue that attraction factors could encourage individuals invest more time and personal devotion. This part will be followed by how online gaming addiction is led by three certain aspects, respectively elaborate rewards cycle, the network of relationship during online gaming and immersion in these virtual environment.
With the popularization and development of the Internet, the online games have sprung up in the last two decades. Due to the properties of high entertainment, they have attracted the interests of a great deal of people. Nonetheless, they also bring out the corresponding addiction. Addiction could be defined as a recurrent unhealthy or self-destructive behavior that is difficult to be ended by individuals (Yee, 2002, p 1). It is claimed that the attraction of online games is one of the key factors of online gaming addiction. However, not all the gamers who are attracted by online games would have online gaming addiction. Hence, it seems that gamers’ motivation plays a greater role in the online gaming addiction. This essay will argue that in the formation of online gaming addiction, the attraction of online games plays a minor role, whilst the motivation of gamers plays a major role.

Online gaming addiction has caused a series of unfavourable influence on individuals and society in recent years, which leads to countless people who have to receive treatment from quitting it(Dean,2020,p.13). It is essential to analyze the reasons which result in online game addiction. This essay argues that attraction or motivation factors cannot independently cause people addicted to online gaming, but people merely have a passing interest in online games. The combination of these two factors can lead to people wholly addicted to online gaming, attraction factors are external causes, and motivation factors are internal causes for people addicted to online gaming. This essay will illustrate attraction factor, motivation factor and explain why the combination of two factors cause people to rely on online games.

Xiaohui HU

However, OGA behaviour only occurs to a certain subset of online gamers, whose addiction reasons are complex and synthetical. Among them, attraction factors and motivation factors become promising ways to explain this issue. In what follows, this essay will shed light on that motivation factors are the main factors leading to OGA from the perspectives of low self-esteem and pressure in real world. Moreover, this essay will argue that the reward mechanism and immersive nature of attraction factors have some impacts on OGA, whereas self-control reduces the influence of attraction factor.

In recent years, gaming addiction -- defined by the WHO as the act of repeatedly throwing oneself uncontrollably into a game-- has gained widespread attention as a new form of addiction (Dean, 2020,p.13). The difference between addictive behavior and long - term involvement is that it is a recurring unhealthy behavior that is difficult for an individual to end. While gaming addiction can be psychologically and physically devastating, computer gamers are growing rapidly. It seems the situation is steadily worsening, with 2012 showing an 8% rise of computer gaming industry on the previous year (Kuss, 2013, p.20). Given this background, this essay firstly analyses the motivative factors which are divided into areas of low self-esteem, loss of control over life and high life stress. However, the personal environment difference limits the effect of motivational factors. And then this essay will secondly claim that the attraction factors which combined sophisticated incentive scheme, multi-level associations and immersion in virtual environments. In brief, it argues that these factors of gaming disorder are multifaceted and often intertwined, while motivational factors are emphasized leading to a greater likelihood of addiction. .

In the twenty-first century, computer science has developed tremendously, allowing people to interact effectively with others in a series of online games. According to a recent study by market research firm Niko Partns, the Chinese online gaming market reached $12 billion in 2013 (Kuss, 2013, p.20).Although the advancement of science and technology has brought numerous benefits, the internet can also bring about many negative aspects such as online game addiction. For the purposes of this essay, the term ‘addiction’ means an inability to stop doing or using something, especially something harmful. This unhealthy recurring behavior depends on attraction and motivation factors (Yee, 2002, p.3). To begin with, this essay will discuss the attraction factors regarding online game addiction. It will essentially be categorized into two factors: the setting of game rewards and the establishment of a bonding network. In addition, this paper will focus on two key arguments for the motivation factor next, which are avoidance of real life because of life stress and low self-esteem. Obviously, both of these key arguments are caused by real-life problems. In brief, the essay will argue that attraction factors and motivation factors may both lead to the online gaming addiction deeply, which are equally important.
