My journey on the PG Cert...

2017/18 Academic year was the perfect year for me to take on the PG Cert. Firstly, it was my first year as an actively involvedTeaching Fellow for a new cohort of students from the beginning of an academic year. But, secondly, and perhaps the most beneficial aspect was our Msc changed drastically in October 2017. This academic year saw the introduction of a new modularised structure, each with stand alone assessments. More importantly, each with tailored, innovative assessments mapped to the learning outcomes. I played a key role in reviewing and planning these assessments. And, the tools given to me by the PG Cert played a fundamental role in doing so.

My Teaching Fellow Role

Over the past academic year I have contributed to teaching on two modules, Epidemiology and Research Skills. My role on the former modules involved facilitating weekly tutorials with a grooupd of 22 students form the Master of Public Health and MSc in Epidemiology courses. I have incorporated many concepts that I learned through PG Cert into my teaching. For example, I have used pallet as a discussion board platform to further test student knowledge after tutorial sessions. I have also incorporated group work and pentameter into my research workshops. More importantly, however, I have applied pedagogical knowledge in designing my sessions and have grown in confidence with my teaching style.

My Course Organiser Role

Aside from contributing directly to teaching on the MSc, my role involves curriculum and assessment review, along with co-ordination of modules on the programme. My experiences on the pG Cert have been invaluable for this role.

In particular, over the past 2 months, I have met with module leaders individually to reflect on the past year of teaching and assessment on their modules. These meetings incorporated sharing and discussing student feedback on lecturing styles and assessments for each of the modules/lecturers.

In particular, the module on Digital Learning, Research and Teaching and the Education Strategy provided with with useful information on how we could improve teaching and assessments for some modules. Modules will undertake flipped classroom approaches where deemed relevent.

Going forward with online platforms...

In my future teaching, I hope to incorporate further elements from the PG Cert into my teaching style. For example, one of my teaching observations suggested I could better utilise mentimeter in terms of the output of student res uses. I hope to improve my use of this software going forward.

While I have used padlet as a discussion board, which was very well received, I would like to further incorporate this online platform into the MSc programme in the future. I think students could potentially create dissertation storyboards using this platform. It could be used as a reflection platform and a space to discuss queries with peers throughout dissertation term. It would also be useful for students to reflect on the research process while completing their dissertations.

Incorporating Technology into formative assessments

Another aspect which I would like to explore having studied the PG Cert is the use of video technology in my tutorials. For the study design component of the Epidemiology module, I hope to organise for students to work together in pairs to develop a video log. There would be 4 groups of 5 students...each taking a different study design and creating a video log style presentation using materials of their choice. Students would be asked to design a study with a specified budget and present the protocol. The brief would ensure students must consider each of the learning outcomes from the lectures on study designs. My aim is to effectively incorporate active online learning into my teaching over the next Academic year.

since May 2018, I have been involved in the design and development of material for a MOOC specialisation in Epidemiology. I am Teaching fellow for the specialisation which will forma part of the Online Global MPH offered by Imperial College London on the Coursera Platform. Currently, we are designing e-tivities and weekly assessments. I have benefited greatly from studying the PG Cert for this role and we plan on incorporating some online digital technology into our group work activities and assessments.
