On the 20th of July, 1944, Stauffenberg arrived to the secret East Prussia Complex on the Eastern Front also known as the Wolf's Lair. The briefing was set for 12:30 pm. When setting up, he was interrupted, causing him to use only 1 of the 2 bombs inside the big black briefcase he held.

He entered inside and placed down his briefcase on the left foot of the table just near where Hitler was seated; intending for him to get a powerful blow from the explosion. Later, 5-10 minutes before the explosion, Stauffenberg makes his exit and quickly tries making his way back to Berlin. As the explosion went off, it was thought that Hitler must be dead.

When Stauffenberg was recovering from his injuries from Tunisia, he was approached by a group of conspirators. The group was led by Gen Henning Von Tresckow. Later, Stauffenberg was amazed by the idea and became a leading member of the plot to attempt to kill the Fuhrer.

The conspirators thought many times that the Getapos would close in on them, but in 1944, Stauffenberg became the chief of staff for commander of the General Replacement Army. This allowed him to gain access to the meeting with Hitler. They planned to carry the explosives in a briefcase, prime the bomb and place it near the Fuhrer, dash back to Berlin, and use the group to gain control of the Replacement Army hoping Hitler had been killed.

The idea was to kill Hitler, but this did not exactly happen. The briefcase had been moved to the table leg away from Hitler and the oak table shielded him from the blast. Because only one bomb had been used, the explosion was not as powerful as intended. 4 people died, many became injured, but Hitler faced no serious injuries.

Around 10 pm, all of the conspirators were taken as prisoners in Berlin. Many were wounded during a short shoot out and then, general in order to save himself, initiated court martial with stauffenberg and others involved to be sentenced to death by firing squad.

Members were taken to the courtyard of bundler block headquarters and executed. Parked cars illuminated the scene, general albrecht being first and then many others. When Stauffenberg was shot, lieutenant Von Haeften jumped in front of the bullet, being the last act of valor from his friend to protect him. He was shot again just after.

Impact

Stauffenberg had an imediate burial and received military honors. He wanted a better future for Germany and is now seen as an honor for attempting to kill the most powerful and evil man to date.

Afterwards, his wife, mother, father, and uncle were executed or arrested by Gestapo along with thousands of others that were allegedly connected to the resistance. His wife was taken to the Gestapo prison at Ravensbruck Concentration Camp and reunited with her children years later. Stauffenberg's son became general in West German Army.

His son said, "For me there is no question that the plot has saved a little of the honour of Germany."
