Learning theories also provide stability and structure. In a nutshell, learning theory provides a framework that helps in understanding the learning process.

The disadvantage of adhering to learning theories is that some learning theories may be out of touch with today's learning. Learning theories can also be limiting when teaching or delivering a curriculum. Still, in reading the articles this week, the most closely aligned learning theories that resonated with me are self-determination and self-regulation theory. According to Li et al. (2021), self-determination and self-regulation theories suggest that students learn best when they directly focus on themselves instead of others.

As a therapist, I work with clients to focus on themselves and how they can change from within. Since I do a lot of 1:1 sessions, the focus is often changing the things they can change within themselves and not others.
