I think Christopher Columbus is a villain. He killed so many peaceful Native Americans for wealth and land. Native Americans that were not killed, were used as slaves and seen as non-human. I believe Columbus committed mass genocide of the Native American people. I do not believe that Christopher Columbus day should be celebrated. Columbus did not care about anybody but himself.

Christopher Columbus is not a villain, because he found the soil we are sitting on today. If he did not find this land, then the British would not have came over to claim it for themselves, and then the people who moved from Europe over to North America would not have established the thirteen colonies, who would not have fought against the British taxing, and would not have won the American Revolution in 1776. But, Christopher Columbus Day is a little extreme, why can't we have a "Ice-Cream Day"?

Christopher Columbus, can he be a hero and a villain? Like Sara mentioned, he did make great discoveries and the video even remarked of his bravery and smarts. However, he is also evil. He walked into these native peoples homeland, while they were minding their own, and absolutely wrecked it. Not only did he take their land, gold, and power, but if they did not comply he would murder or brutally punish them. I believe we have to thank Christopher Columbus for his sailing achievements, but for his leadership? Absolutely not, he certainly does not have a good heart.

I thin that Columbus was a villain. He did some brave things with exploring areas that Europeans were not familiar with, but he also encouraged the massacres of native people. I think that he was an important part of history that helped the world expand west, but I do not think that his activities in these areas should be excused. It is because of European explorers like Columbus that the massacring/poor treatment of Native Americans was tolerated for so long in the US. -Morgan Parris

I think the problem I have with Christopher Columbus is the "fact" that he "discovered the Americas." According to all of American history, there were people here first, with legitimate claims to the land. Columbus didn't discover the Americas because a people had found it and have lived on it for years before 1492. I also think we cannot condemn him for the actions of the Europeans--they are known for colonizing and murdering thousands of innocent people. But he is a major factor in what occurred to the Native Americans, so I do think that he shouldn't be so idolized in America. But neither should Andrew Jackson, or General Lee, etc.

I would have to say that he is both, but mainly a villain. He was a hero in the sense of his exploration of land and the "finding" or America. But he is a villain in the sense of what he did when he got to the so called new land. He straight up killed way to many innocent people.
