Erin Johnson I read the article on how covid is affecting people with disabilities. I learned that right before the pandemic, the company for Clorox was prepared for a mediocre year and a loss in shares. I also learned that Care-givers were considered threats to the people they cared for, because they could contract the virus and pass it to their patients. I can help make a difference by donating PPE gear and disinfecting supplies free of charge to nursing homes, etc. My article was related to the theme of radical kinship, because it explained the bond between a care-giver and her patient, and how covid ripped through group homes, and nursing homes.

I did not know this and find it so disturbing considering the mask protects you from contracting/ spreading the virus and is therefore life saving, so the fact that someone would be harassed for wearing one is not ok.

I learned a bit of new things but unfortunately a lot of these things were not surprising. I believe I can help make a difference by continuing to educate myself and others on this issue because it affects a community that I am apart of. This issue related to radical kinship and anti-racism as it talked about racism and how it affected black communities nationwide and how because how systematic racism affects the black communities, treatment for COVID and healthcare is no doubt at a disadvantage.

I read the article about how covid is affecting people with disabilities. One thing that stood out to me that I didn't think about before is that wearing a mask that allows yourself to have protection and protect others is essentially a privilege. The article mentioned that one resident was medically unable to wear a face mask. Yet there are people who selfishly choose not to wear a mask and do not have any medical conditions that put others at danger, which is quite the opposite of radical kinship. Wearing a mask is one small way to show kinship because it is contributing to your community because if only one person wore it then it would be practically useless.

I read the article about food insecurity in Montgomery county. Something that I realized while reading this article is that the pandemic can bring a lot of our attention to ourselves, and we sometimes forget about the people who are most in need. Food insecurity in Montgomery County, one of the most affluent counties in the nation, has gone up by 5% since 2018 thanks to the pandemic. The article made it very clear that even though I may not realize it, there are so many people in such close proximity who are struggling every day just to get food on the table. I can make a difference by donating more to local food banks and becoming more aware of the disparities happening around me. This is related to Radical Kinship and AntiRacism because the people who are now battling food insecurity in our county once had jobs and were not worried about where their next meal would come from, so checking our privilege and helping others can help us to be more grateful for what we have and to avoid taking it for granted.

I read the article about domestic abuse during Covid. It opened my eyes to how stay at home orders have an increasing effect on domestic abuse, as people are locked in their homes with possible abusers. They have less opportunities to seek help, and this tense time could also escalate the abuse. People like doctors, teachers, and police have less access to people who might be victims of domestic violence, and unable to help. I think that spreading awareness, and resources is one way that we can help people who are victims of domestic abuse.

I read the article about the Covid prison situation in DC. I learned that because of the virus, health codes are not allowing as many people to be kept in close proximity and therefore, many prisons are releasing offenders who have not completed serving their sentences. Many of these offenders were arrested due to violent crimes. Most inmates aren't being provided with masks or being given much medical attention if they are showing symptoms of the virus.

I read the article about how COVID was impacting domestic abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV). I thought it was highly distressing how hotlines prepared for more domestic abuse reports, but in some regions the calls actually decreased by more than 50%. I learned that this drop was due to people being unable to safely connect to services. However, due to COVID IPV is increasing because of the stress of the pandemic and families, and of course quarantine. It also tied into what was talked about in Social Action today, because the article discussed how economic independence is crucial for violence prevention, but many people have too much of a financial entanglement with their abusive partners to leave them. The article also ended with the thought that we should be taking more steps to help victims of domestic abuse and IPV, such as enabling wider access to the internet so that people can search for resources, connect to hotlines, and maintain social contact with loved ones who can help them.

I read the article describing how the Pandemic is effecting intimate partner violence (IPV). I learned that although there may be an increase in cases of IPV because of the required time spent at home, there has been a drop of 50% in terms of people who call to report this violence. COVID-19 has made it harder for people to find a safe place to contact and speak with those who may be able to help and economic issues especially within this time has complicated the process of living in a safe environment. Radical Kinship and Anti-Racism is intertwined with the increase of domestic violence because citizens of the United States need to open up to larger issues to give others help. The article referred to the fact that White people are more likely to contact the police, but in light of recent police brutality, Black people are less likely. This is a major systemic issue that majorly effects the trust in our government to keep people safe.

I read the article about food insecurity in Montgomery County. Something I learned was that until August 2020, there was no food distribution in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area. This especially surprised me because of the close proximity to DC, and how many people are living in this area. One distribution center ran out of food in about 30 minutes, showing how deep the impact of COVID-19 is felt, even in a county as affluent as Montgomery County. Sometimes it is easy to focus on your own needs, but it is important to focus on others around you who you may not realize are struggling, and even more important to focus on the marginalized and most vulnerable during this time. Something I am doing is, I am participating in the Greg Gannon food drive with my family to collect canned goods from all over our neighborhood and I can also work to donate to other food banks as well as educating myself, as well as others on the food insecurities faced by people in such close proximity to me.

I read the article about the food insecurity as a result of the pandemic. I learned that 17 million more people (which is added to the 35 million who are already food insecure) cannot find a sufficient amount of food for themselves and their families. I also learned that food distribution in the D.C. area was just addressed recently, even though there are so many people who desperately need food during the pandemic. It is through posting this article, asking for government support, and Nourish Now's distribution event that people are becoming more aware of the lack of food in the D.C. area and how to be more involved with this organization. Since I have not experienced this personally, I did not realize that being food insecure can “be a source of shame”, so being as empathetic and understanding as possible is crucial to make people feel comfortable to receive help for this huge and crucial necessity. I also really enjoyed the ending of the article where it mentioned how it is through giving out food that volunteers can show their support and that “we are all in this together.”

I read the article about how Coronavirus lockdowns and stay at home orders have trapped IPV victims with their abusers. I learned that domestic abuse hotlines experienced a decline in the number of calls they received because victims are not able to get away to call the hotlines and are seeing fewer people, like teachers or friends, who could report the violence. The abuse, however, has most likely risen due to many stressors in the world like financial issues or homeschooling. This article related to our themes of antiracism because although people of all backgrounds, races, and genders can be victims of abuse, there is a disproportionate percentage of cases on POC because of many systematic injustices. To look at this issue as a whole, while ignoring that information, would be irresponsible and unjust. We can help victims of abuse by expanding internet access, giving victims a resource and outlet, or by increasing IPV questionnaires which are already mandated in many women's medical fields.

I read the article about the effects COVID has had on less fortunate people in certain areas. I noticed how difficult it got for people to get food in their areas due to health risks. The lack of volunteers and the rise of cases decreased the amount of food they could get. I also learned that over 26 million adults did not have enough to eat due to many reasons such as financial insecurity. COVID also affected jobs which made people have to choose between their next meal or their mortgage. Overall, COVID has affected everybody and people with insufficient funds cannot afford household payments, food, or even medicine for their health.

I read the article about inmates being released early due to COVID. It made me realize how easily COVID could spread in prison systems and how many unnecessary deaths it could cause. One way to fix this would be to create rehabilitation programs for certain crimes instead of overcrowding prisons and making them health hazards. This is also an antiracism issue because marginalized communities are typically the ones being given longer sentences for the same crimes as more privileged groups. This means that larger populations of these groups will be at risk of infection while in prison.

I read about how COVID-19 affected a small group home for disabled women. This article really highlighted how homes such as the one in the article go unnoticed and underfunded in a time of crisis like this. The direct support professionals are definitely underpaid and are being excluded from the benefits given to other home health workes, including those who care for the elderly in private group homes. This article was especially impactful, because when a resident of the home contracted the virus, the direct support proffesionals had not been able to distance from her while they were caring for her. Meanwhile, the resident with COVID-19 could not wear a mask for health reasons. In the end, the virus was spread to multiple staff members, most of whom recovered, except for a beloved direct support professional, who died in the intensive care unit. Something that I can do to make a difference regarding this issue is donate to support homes such as this one, as well as advocate for their protection and inclusion in government funding during the pandemic. This article relates to the theme of Radical Kinship, because it encourages support for people that we cannot neccessarily relate to, but to whom we have a duty, as human beings, to lend our help.

I chose to read the article about how the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting the LGBTQIA+ community. The article was written in June, so specific data about the effects of COVID were not available, but experts predicted many detrimental effects on the community. For example, being forced to stay home may worsen the situation of LGBTQIA+ teens who are struggling with unsupportive families. Along these lines, members of this community may be more socially isolated than straight or cisgender people, and the mandate to social distance may worsen the mental health effects of this isolation and increase incidences of suicide and depression among the LGBTQIA+ community. In addition, members of this community may be more reluctant to leave their jobs because of the threat of discrimination and not being able to get another one, leaving them more vulnerable to the virus. Overall, reading this article opened my eyes to the struggles of a population that has been neglected by this country and how it will again be targeted disproportionately by COVID-19 as a result of struggles it has always faced.

It was really interesting to me because it was written more about one woman who contracted covid and sadly passed away, and the effects her absence had on the individuals living in the group home. I think it's important to keep reading about first hand experiences like this because they show the people behind the statistics you might read about in the news or on social media. The article also touched on the unequal availability of medical resources, such as cleaning supplies, during the pandemic. I thought that was interesting because it shows how poorly managed the distribution of cleaning and medical supplies has been, and how every person needs to keep the common good and other people in mind when purchasing such products and not hoard or overbuy them.

I read the article about how the LGBTQIA+ community has been impacted by COVID. I learned that they are not counted in the COVID case and death counts, which the article said would cover the likely disproportionate effect of COVID on them. On top of fearing discrimination in the workplace and in their daily lives, they have to worry about being discriminated against or refused healthcare by biased individuals in the medical field. This reality has become even more apparent now that we are in a pandemic. Also, trans and enby students who rely on campus housing due to families that aren't accepting of them are disproportionately suffering from a lack of positive and loving social interaction, and because of this, are suffering disproportionate rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. It is important to realize that we are not being informed about numerous challenges that minority groups especially are facing during COVID. We have to do our own research, reach out, and stand in solidarity with them to make sure everyone is seen and heard.

I read the article about food insecurities in Montgomery County. I learned about the lack of necessities and it shocked me because even though I have been living here, I did not notice the significance that it had on this county. I realize that I have the ability to give to the people in need instead of sitting back like I had done in the past, since I was unaware of the urgence of the issue.

I read the article on how the LGBTQ+ community is affected by COVID. It was interesting to read how the article had to be based on inferences rather than statistics, because there are no readily available statistics on people's gender identity or sexual orientation. It made me wonder what other information we as a society are missing out on because no one thinks to ask about it.

I read the article about food insecurity in Montgomery County. This article really helped me see that even though I've had a hard time during covid, there are so many people in the area who don't have the things they need. I also learned that the food insecurity has doubled since the start of the pandemic.

I read about how corona affects people with disabilities. “Tuesday in May, the women had spent 56 days inside their Northern Virginia home, as their caregivers tried to keep the coronavirus out. Now it was Day 57, and the fifth resident, whose guardian asked that she not be named, was getting her vital signs checked. Blood pressure, oxygen level and then, the beep of the thermometer.” This is so much work to keep her safe and shows why we need to keep wearing our masks and stay social distance.
