Throughout the Cuban Revolution, Castro and Guevara were insistent that equality was the primary purpose for reform. This was demonstrated by the employment of women as rebels, many of whom were unsuspected by Batista's forces and felt an even greater sense of empowerment that would increase net support for Castro's revolutionaries. This photograph illuminates the magnitude with which women felt determined to fight for freedom and overcome social repression.

Raul Castro pictured with a sniper in the Sierra Maestra mountain ranges reveals many of the guerrilla tactics used by the rebels which helped them to victory against the Batista militia. The headquarters of the operations was in the remote Sierra Maestra to avoid direct attack on the main resources and troop deposit. The rebels would bargain for weaponry from local farmers and mutinous Batista soldiers in the promise for political and economic equality.

Rebel forces gathered on the property of a rural farm unveil the cooperation of the general public within Castro's ideologies. Having the trust of civilians is critical in understanding the nature of the Cuban revolution in that it was enhanced by propaganda with many of the public enticed by excitement into supporting the rebels into local ambushes and generating funds and forces to support the revolutionaries.

Batista's army execute a rebel associate by firing squad in 1956. Batista's methods of warfare to counteract guerrilla tactics was to use brutal violence and excessive capital punishment to deter the public from initially siding with the revolutionaries. This tells historians that there was no limits on the cruelty of the revolution whilst revealing yet another principle for civilians to oppose Batista. In order to retain secrecy that would assist in ambushes and guerrilla warfare, the rebels mainly chose plain attire contrasting Batista's rigid uniform and traditional military WW2-esque tactics.

A group of rebels await an ambush over the hill where they utilise hit and run tactics to ensure they continue to deplete the resources of Batista's military while losing ideally no casualties. It was only because of Che Guevara's planning and designing of guerrilla tactics that the rebel forces were capable of overcoming initial defeats in order to finish victorious in the revolution. The rebels often attacked in small enclaves of men and women who used natural cover and silenced weapons.
