Northanger Abbey is easily digestible. It's short and has easy to read writing. It's story is actually quite engaging but takes a while to get there. I found the characters to be a bit two-dimensional or at least with some exceptions as they could all fit into certain tropes and boxes. We don't really spend enough time with each of them to make them as interesting or fleshed out as they could be and that could be due to the short length of the novel.

With a naive female protagonist, traditional wedding values, and an entirely female audience, Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen is a must-read novel. In the late 1790s, the only thing on a teenage girl's mind was marriage; Catherine Morland is no exception. Throughout the novel, Catherine meets various suitors competing for her love and learns that even best friends may not have the best intentions. While trying to find her place in high society, Catherine goes through a journey of self-discovery and loses her fairytale outlook and naiveté.

In a time where marriage was the single most important thing was getting married, many marriages were surprisingly dysfunctional. Isabella and John’s relationship up to this point has been based purely on financial gain and it is clear that there is not a true bond between the two as Isabella begins shamelessly flirting with Captain Tilney. Isabella and Henry on the other hand are on their journey “to find true love”. My main critique of the novel is that I feel as if it insists upon itself. I think that it tries too hard to have some kind of deep meaning and message but ends up just projecting the average stereotypes of “finding true love” or “marrying for money”. I personally don’t think it adds too much to those respective topics and honestly begins to sound a bit repetitive, constantly pushing the narrative that you always need to find true love and that marrying for money will never work out. I feel that has already been thoroughly established and does not need the constant reminder of those two. I give it a solid 2.5 out of 5 stars.

It turns out that not every one of Jane Austen's heroines are like Elizabeth Bennet-- in Northanger Abbey, Catherine Morland, an "almost pretty" girl engages in classic pursuits of finding a husband. Through meetings with Isabella Thorpe and dancing at balls, she eventually meets Mr. Henry Tilney. A seemingly popular storyline of the time, Austen's novel seems not to awe readers. Although, the nuances of the character does make the book recieve a higher rating than an average 2.5.

Catherine Goes Exploring

In Northanger Abbey, we get a first-hand experience of a curious, average young woman named Catherine who encounters new people and experiences throughout the novel. After some time in Bath, she makes friends, including a man who is a little more than that, and she becomes more receptive to the idea of love. One friend named Isabella grows extremely close to her, but we find that their relationship falters due to drama between their families. Overall, the characters have been well-developed, and Catherine's experience gives the novel an engaging perspective.

The Northanger Abby has been a whirlwind of emotions. There has certainly been a lot going on. Our main character doesn't act like a main character and falls for a man she dances with once. Her supposed best friend takes advantage of her and causes great pain to Catherine's brother. Anyone could have seen it coming if you read the book. Catherine plays a naive and innocent role in this book. She constantly tries to excuse anything that has been done wrong to her and doesn't understand what's going on. Isabella, her best friend, uses this to her advantage and makes her do activities that she doesn't want to do. Additionally, Isabella who was supposed to marry Catherine's brother breaks up her engagement to go marry the brother of who Catherine likes. (I know, very crazy)

Seems to be a story of fish out of water, Catherine our young protagonist is experiencing English society for the first time as she goes out into Bath with the Allens. We get a lot of naivety as she

forms connections with individuals, that are teaching and exposing her to the true intentions of people as she is used to seeing the world in such rose colored glasses, or just through the lens of stories she reads. Now she is being exposed to complexities of the real world. While this may come off as annoying and pretty out of touch to most individuals, I appreciate the grace that is being given to her and how a protagonist that is not the most sure of herself nor fully realized is put at the forefront, it's something different for that time. Mixed in is of course lots of courtship and proposals, because at that time marriage seems to always be the ultimate goal, so we see lots of different relationship dynamics that however at times I'm disinterested.

Catherine Morland, a naive and imaginative young woman who loves Gothic novels, visits Bath for the first time. While there, she encounters the charming figure of Henry Tilney. She also recognizes her friend Isabella's intent behind her brother John, and how that compares to her personal pursuit of Henry Tilney. Catherine is invited to Tilney's estate Northanger Abbey, where her imagination pertaining to her love for gothic novels begin to run wild. Henry confronts Catherine with her baseless assumptions, teaching her to distinguish between fiction and reality. Through these experiences, Catherine matures, gaining a deeper understanding of human nature and relationships. Catherine eventually finds love and happiness with Henry through their shared experiences and personal growth, while Isabella ends her engagement with James due to her flirtatious nature with Henry's brother.

"Often Inattentive, Occasionally Stupid"

One thing about Catharine is that she always believes everyone has the best intentions – she does not understand why or how people could possibly be malicious. John Thorpe taking her for a crazy carriage ride and Isabella openly entertaining flirtation while engaged must be, at worst, a misunderstanding. While these interactions are entertaining, they are also frustrating. When John Thorpe canceled Catharine's engagement with the Tilney family without her permission (and Catharine fell for his excuse) I literally had to put the book down because I could not handle it. All in all, the book is interesting and fun, and I can't wait to see how it ends. 3.5/5

Two bland main characters 3/5

Personally, I would rate Northanger Abbey about three stars. The language and satires that appears in the book every now and then is witted. Yet Henry and Catherine are amongst the most uncharacterized protagonists I’ve ever read. There isn’t much written on how their affection developed. Henry’s attachment to Catherine were more out of conscience and rebellion against his father’s authority, rather than real admiration for her. Catherine, on the other hand was ever more passive in this relationship and sudden in her attachment to Henry.

When the Tilneys invite her to their home, Northanger Abbey, Catherine’s fascination with Gothic novels fuels her overactive imagination, leading her to suspect dark secrets within the abbey. By Chapter 15, Catherine is settling into life at Northanger. Still, her tendency to romanticize reality sets the stage for humorous and poignant moments as she navigates the complexities of society and relationships.

I will give it a 2 star, its just not my cup of tea.

One imagines the perfect heroine to be good-looking, funny, charismatic, or have that one weird hobby they are especially good at. Well, Catherine is none of that. The only good “characteristic” Catherine has is being “almost pretty”. Although she is naive or some may say dumb including myself, Catherine has the plot armor of an unkillable dragon. Is she supposed to be relatable? In my opinion, Catherine is the least interesting character in Bath which is astonishing since she is the main protagonist…..I would prefer Isabella as the main heroine. I give this 3 big booms. - Ephrath

Catherine's ignorance to social cues and awkwardness does not seem to be getting her anywhere when it comes to finding a husband. So far in Northanger Abbey, she has come across two potential candidates. One being Mr. Thorpe and the other being Mr. Tilney. Catherine hopes to get closer to Mr. Tilney during her stay at the Northanger Abbey, but ends up feeling like he does not like her anymore after he finds her snooping around his home. Overall, the characters are fun to read about, but the novel does feel like it drags on in the middle.
