Momenta School integrates social-emotional learning into daily routines alongside academics. Students practice mindfulness through core breathing exercises to build self-regulation skills, allowing them to connect with their emotions and stay grounded. Guided by positive psychology, teachers encourage kindness, empathy, and self-care. Tools like beanie babies and Hoberman spheres make deep-breathing exercises engaging for younger students, promoting a calm learning environment. This approach empowers students to independently manage their emotions, equipping them with lifelong skills for self-regulation and emotional well-being.

Each student writes down something that helps them feel calm or happy (e.g., taking deep breaths, doing yoga, practicing gratitude, hugging a friend) and places it in the jar.
If students feel overwhelmed or need a break during the day, they can pull an idea from the jar to remind them of simple ways to feel better and refocus.

The article discusses the impact of a mindfulness-based intervention on elementary school students with severe learning disabilities. It focuses on improving basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and reducing internalized symptoms (anxiety and depression). The study, conducted as a randomized cluster trial, showed that mindfulness practices can positively influence students' emotional well-being and psychological needs, contributing to better mental health outcomes. These findings suggest that mindfulness can be a useful tool in supporting students with learning challenges.

This TED talk explores the importance of mindful breathing as a tool for reducing stress, improving mental health, and promoting well-being in educational environments. By stimulating the vagus nerve, mindful breathing triggers the body’s relaxation response, offering a practical way to address emotional challenges students face despite high academic performance. The speaker advocates for integrating mindfulness practices in schools to foster compassion, joy, and connection, which are essential for emotional and academic success. The ultimate message is about nurturing students’ emotional well-being while promoting academic achievement.
