The Veterans Community Project is dedicated to supporting every man and woman who took the oath for our country. They are determined to make a difference in the lives of homeless Veterans, a task accomplished by the community for the community. They are building a specialized community of tiny-homes and onsite services to provide housing stability and address the underlying cause of the Veteran’s homelessness.

51% of individual homeless veterans have disabilities.
50% have serious mental illness.
70% have substance abuse problems.
There are 39,471 homeless veterans in America alone!

At the end of our service project, I feel good inside knowing I helped spread awareness about one of the largest issues in America. By contacting VCP, I learned that kids have a voice, they just need some assistance getting their voices out there. By taking time to work on the trifold and Padlet, I learned to organize my time and meet deadlines. In conclusion, I feel good inside, and I learned some things about myself.

My final reflection of the Spring Passion Project is that it was really cool and it makes me feel good. When we contacted VCP and they replied back and said that they would send a speaker. I thought it was so cool and I didn't realize how much of a voice kids have if you just speak up. I love what VCP does for the veterans and I am happy that I get to spread awareness about it and possibly help them out. In conclusion, I am glad that we did this and I hope that this project will inspire other kids to help out their local organizations.

Where is the land and what are they doing?

The people at VCP bought a four-acre vacant site near 89th and Troost from the Kansas City Land Bank, which markets and sells vacant and abandoned properties. They have completed the first 240-sqaure-foot house and are in the process of identifying the first resident. They tentatively plan to have 50 tiny homes at what is being called Veterans Village, but that depends on the fundraising. Each house costs about $10,000 to build and equip.
