In the spirit of "culture of error", I think the peer-edit PowerPoint slides do a great job of instructing students on how to edit their peers' papers. Something I loved to see was the instruction to start by giving compliments on their peer's work. Praising work is essential for building confidence regardless of the quality of writing. However, receiving that praise from one of your peers will impact this student's confidence more than if a teacher were to say the same thing.

A major takeaway for me is that editing should not just be a process of an adult marking up a child's paper to make it "perfect". That does not reflect the child's PROCESS of writing. Editing and revising should be a student-led way to take their writing to the next level as an authentic reflection of their authorship, NOT to be "perfect" or flawless.

Modeling editing and revising can be done via a few questions and can lead students to work together before they even practice the skill independently.
Tackle student conferencing where they are at - low level students - focus on the basics - high level students - focus on expanding and growth.
Edit "social media posts" so that students can rewrite different perspectives.
"Grammar Groups" - focusing on differentiating students based on where they are at, grouping students based on needs and a common problem they all are facing.

Instead of giving students a paper to "fix." Give them a writing piece that is correct and have them highlight what is correct about the passage so they can see how they can incorporate it in their own writing.

I read a powerpoint lesson about peer editing.

This is a skill that is not only cross-curricular BUT it can also be used to build our students social/emotional mindset as well.

The powerpoint broke peer editing down into three chunks that really spoke to me.

I can see these three steps being able to be used in any class to develop strong revision techniques. They could be used for scientific explanations, writing prompts, math problems, art work etc. I really think keeping the steps simple and streamlined will allow our students to feel the freedom to celebrate each other and deliver that peer encouragement. I also think that peer encouragement is a huge tool for motivation and growth that we may be under-utilizing.

The SEL tie in could be as simple as a "How do you feel about the task?" check in before and after revising. It could be framing peer editing as a tool to shift our mindset about the work we are doing to a more confident place.

Revising actually happens during and after the writing process, and we often do it more than once. – This was something I did not realized but very true.

Rubrics and checklists- We already do

Students need to know our expectations and we should be providing clear checklist and rubrics for their writing.

-Break the checklist apart for students to focus on one thing so they aren't overwhelmed.

Difference between revising: altering big picture, conceptual ideas. Editing: working on cohesion, word choice, flow, etc... and proofreading: grammar and spelling. Making sure students know and apply this.

It's important to have students understand the difference beteween revising and editing. To revise is to see the writing with new eyes and consider the audience, purpose, organization and word choice and sentence structure. To edit is to fix capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

Editing your writing for kids. Using mentor texts that are the exemplar so that students can point out what the author did that was correct. Pointing out the mistakes are sometimes helpful but they see that many times on their own work. Having a standard of exemplars gives them the bar that they need to work toward.

Quick edits: Have students frame their sentences at the end of every period or after every paragraph. Have partner check the paragraph to confirm that they caught mistakes. Use a goal sheet to have them notice trends and growth in their writing in.
