To start off this project I needed to make a mug blank so then I can add my sculptures. First, I flattened out a big slab of clay which I then was going to cut out the width of the mug and then I rolled out the extra into a slab again and cut out a circle to make the bottom of the mug.

The handle for my mug I wanted it to be a big mushroom so i started off with making a big long rope of clay and then squeezing it tigger together at the end of the rope so it could look wider and more like the mushroom base. For the rope of the long rope of clay i smoothed it out so it could get smaller and less bulky as the top. I smoothed the extra clay from the top to the bottom so it could be the biggest there.

Different type of mushroom- Oyster

At this point I felt the mug was too blank and basic so I decided to add a different type of mushroom because I felt more variety would make it more interesting to look at. I googled around and saw other artist had added oyster mushroom to their own mugs and I thought it would be perfect to add to my own mug for the variety. I made this mushroom style by just making a ball and then flattening out till it was around a forth or so of an inch so it wasn’t too thin and neither too thick and I cut a quarter of it off. I then scraped on some half circles on it and scored the flat sides and attached it to the mug, proceeding to smooth it in. I made 3 more and I was happy with how it looked

This is where I came to and issue because i was unsure how I was going to make the mug look like it was a log. I was looking at pictures of other mushroom mugs and was confused it they painted the mug to make it look like a log or if the other pieces they had sketched on lines. I came to the conclusion that I was going to sketch on lots of lines and some going in round shapes so the mug could start looking like a log.

I felt like something was missing and that the mug was looked far to blank and so I decided to add some grass at the bottom of the mug so it would look like a stump coming out of the grass. The first time i tried to make the grass I had the idea of rolling out a long thing slab and then cutting out the shape of grass and attaching it to the mug so it would have more dimension. For me this didn’t give me the desired look I wanted even though I thought it was a good idea because I couldn’t cut of the grass in the right shape and even when I let the slab dry a little I was never able to make the grass lines as thin as I wanted them to be so I came up with a new idea. I decided to sketch on the lines of the grass because this was the only way to make the lines at the grass as thin and close as I wanted them. With this method I was able to make the lines much closer to each-other and i’m really happy with the outcome for sure.
