Throughout my Early Childhood Education program, I have grown into a reflective, caring, and professional emerging educator who values relationships, inclusion, and lifelong learning. My experiences as a student, mother, placement student, and supply educator have helped shape my understanding of how important the early years are in supporting children’s development and well-being. I bring patience, empathy, adaptability, and a strong commitment to creating safe and engaging learning environments. This portfolio represents my journey, accomplishments, and readiness to continue growing within the early childhood profession.

Using Observation to Understand Children's Strengths, Interests, and Capabilities

Artifact: Anecdotal Observation – Group Play with Playdough

Observation Summary:
During a group play session with a playdough sensory kit, I observed several children engaging in rich, hands-on exploration using various tools such as rollers, molds, and plastic cutters. The children made different shapes and impressions, using animal-shaped molds and other creative tools. As they played, they communicated with one another—asking questions, sharing tools, and imitating each other’s actions. For example, when one child rolled out the dough and used a bunny mold, others noticed and copied the same action, adding their own variations.

What I Noticed About Their Development:

Fine Motor Skills: Children showed good control and coordination while using rollers and cutters.

Social-Emotional Development: They took turns, helped each other, and expressed joy and pride in their creations.

Language & Communication: They used descriptive language like “Look, it’s a cat!” and asked peers, “Can I use that roller?”

Imitation & Collaboration: They observed and mirrored each other’s techniques, demonstrating interest in peer interactions.

Reflection:
This observation helped me recognize how sensory play supports multiple areas of child development at once. Through playdough, the children were strengthening their fine motor skills, practicing social communication, and learning through imitation and peer modeling. It also reminded me of the importance of creating open-ended, shared play experiences where children can explore materials freely and at their own pace. As an educator, this encouraged me to observe more closely and to see children’s actions as meaningful learning moments.
