The artworks are based on and created during the Covid-19 pandemic. Students will work in groups to examine and discuss the artworks.

At the start of the lesson, I will ask students to discuss how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed their lives. I will ask them to discuss and write down one positive and one negative change that has happened to them since the pandemic, After the small group discussion, we will come together as a class and share our experiences. I will also share my responses with the class to make them feel comfortable to discuss their feelings and vulnerabilities. I will group students based on their responses. In their groups, students will choose one artwork that stands out or resonates with them to examine. I will ask them to respond to the prompts below in their discussion. They will record their responses on their worksheets. I will walk around and provide guidance and share my experiences with students as needed.

In the second half of the lesson, students will create a word cluster using the Wordsalad tablet application or Word Art, a word cluster creation website, (depending on the available technology in our classroom). I will demonstrate how to use the application to the whole class using emotions that my chosen artwork evoked. I will show students how to input their words, how to change the font, and how to change the colors and size of their words. Each student will create their own word cluster using the emotions that their chosen artwork evoked. I will provide a checklist for each student to check off the elements that are required in their word clusters. (At least 7 words (feelings), At least two different fonts, at least three different font colors, and a different font size for each word).

After students finish their word clusters, we will share them in partners and critique each other's artworks using the critique prompts I will provide. After our peer critiques, each student will share their word cluster with the class while we sit in a sharing circle. They will show their chosen artwork from the CAM Instagram and explain how their chosen emotions relate to the CAM artwork. Students can support each other as they share their feelings and experiences. I hope that this lesson will allow students to explore their feelings (both negative and positive) about the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prompts for examination:

When viewing this artwork, what emotions do you feel?

How does your chosen artwork relate to your family or life?

Describe elements of the artwork that stand out to you and why they stand out?

Why do you think that artists are creating art about the Covid-19 pandemic?

Peer Critique Prompts

One thing I like about your artwork is__________________.

One thing that stood out to me about your artwork is____________ because___________.

Your artwork makes me feel______________ because_______________.

I am curious about__________ in your artwork because_____________.

One thing that our artworks have in common________________.

Clothes are a very individualized decision, which makes them a great outlet for students to reflect on themselves. To start, each student will be given a plain white t-shirt and asked to reflect on the aspects that influence them. Some examples include culture, family, interests, hobbies, school, and so forth. Following this, students will have the opportunity to use a variety of art supplies to decorate their shirt. Students will be allowed to take these t-shirts home and work on them there, as they may have other supplies they would like to use to create their desired product. They can use the Google Arts and Culture page to research culturally relevant art and include some ideas on their t-shirts.

Once the students have finished creating the t-shirt, they will take six photographs. The first photograph will be a picture of them wearing their t-shirt. The remaining five photographs will be close-up shots of selected individual elements on the t-shirt. After the students has taken the photographs, they will need to be printed and cut out. Then, the students will write descriptive captions for the five photographs explaining the decision to include those elements, their history, their significance, and how it contributes to them as a person. To conclude the project, students will post up their pictures in the classroom, creating a gallery in which they can walk around and examine the works of their classmates.

Students will be working in pairs and will use a laptop to access an interactive site. One person will be exploring the site and the other person will be writing down notes on what they learned from the site, what features they liked or found interesting and what the site needs to be improved on. Since students will be working with a partner, they will discuss and reflect what they learned from the site, did they see art or culture that are familiar, and something they could relate to.
The site I explored was Google Arts and Culture site, which included some interactive experiences, discovering art and culture around the world, exploring museums at home, and many other interesting features. I think using this site as an activity would be a great way for students to explore different art and culture, while being in a classroom or at home.

The students can pick a post that makes them feel a certain emotion, have experienced the post, in some way, identify with the image, etc,. I will provide the following questions so my students can go off those questions to select their images from the Instagram page:
1. "How does this image made you feel?"
2. "What does this image remind you of?"
3."How can I relate to this image?"
4. "Why does it make you feel a certain way?"
After they choose they're 3 post, I will make groups of 3-4 students and have them share their images and reasoning. Before grouping them, I will show my 3 images of choice and explain why I choose them to give them an example of what I am asking them to do. After my students are done sharing with their classmates, I will ask the whole class, who would like to share 1 image out of the 3 they choose to share their reasoning for selecting that image.
Through this exercise my students will be able to analyze the image and identify how and why they relate to it. COVID has caused very stressful times for everyone, so this is a way to create a safe space for students to express and voice their feelings, concerns, home situations with their peers. Choosing the images is the art implemented to create a sense of critical thinking and analytical.

Then say, now that you have taken a good look at it, what can you tell me about it? can you relate to the picture? Teacher will help students understand that with photography we can let people see the way we view the world and can create emotions. With the previous discussion on surrealhk pictures, the teacher along with the students will discuss that with this pandemic there have been many shifts we have had to make in our lives. The teacher will help students understand that this is how the students can relate to the picture.
With virtual learning, the Teacher will make a google slide with a before covid and after covid chart.
Students will brainstorm and be given the opportunity to discuss their experiences and their feelings before the pandemic and after the pandemic. After class, the teacher will have students look for a picture of something they were able to do before the pandemic and will be asked to take a picture of how things are now with the pandemic. If they go out, what are some precautions they take? Students along with the help of their parents will submit the pictures to the app ClassDojo.
Day 2: The teacher will have to load all the pictures to google slides. Going back to the before-after chart students will help the teacher categorize pictures to where they belong. First, ask students how they felt during the COVID-19 pandemic. This could include how they felt about the current events that took place during this time (2020 elections, police brutality). After students shared their thoughts, state how sometimes these feelings are hard to express in only words and how some people use other methods of communicating what they need to say. Introduce "First Responders" online exhibition and have students look through it, asking them to analyze its context, meaning, and perhaps why the artists chose to speak out using media art. After students have toured the exhibition, students will have the chance to express their own 2020 experience. This could be through photographs, digital art, digital collage making, or photo editing. Students should ask themselves these questions as they work on their media art piece:

How did this event impact you?

How did you feel during this event?

Did you learn anything new/Did anything stand out to you when this happened?

What would you like viewers to keep in mind when viewing your work?

After they have finished their piece, students should name and write a brief description of their work -- a couple of sentences since their piece should do most of the "talking". Students will have a chance to view each other's work through a tour or an online exhibition (Google Sites). At the end of this lesson/activity, students should have an understanding of how media art carries meaning and has the power to convey messages that words sometimes cannot.

A draw my story is based off the popular internet video trend, "draw my life" in which a person narrates their life story to a video of them drawing images on a whiteboard. For this lesson, students will be creating a "draw my story" based on an important event in their life. The event should be something that sparked a person realization or shift in their life as long as they are comfortable sharing it with the class. Following the standard, the student will first begin by brainstorming their ideas with a partner- sharing their experiences and working together to come up with ways to express it, audibly and visually. Next, because the videos are relatively fast paced, students will create a story board to plan out their videos which will include each drawing needed for their story and a caption. The students will refer to the story board as a script. Next, students will use a whiteboard and an iPad or phone to begin recording their video. Students will draw themselves in a scene pertaining to the story they are telling. For example, if the scene is, "while sitting at the kitchen table with my mom, she told me .." the student would draw themselves with their mom at a table and could even include caption bubbles. The video will then be exported to an editing software such as iMovie where they can add their voiceover, based on the story board. Lastly, students will present their videos to the class; communicating their stories depicting a personal realization.

The materials use for this lesson can include: Play-Doh, paint, uncooked noodles, lentils, cotton, popsicle sticks, colors, markers, wool, glue, etc. Students will need to use an A4 color paper or card board that will be folded in half to divide the different stages before and after the pandemic. They also have to give their creation a creative title based on their work. For example, in the pandemic I personally felt lonely, suffocated, worried, stressed and much more. On the other hand, during the pandemic (now) I feel more protected, accompanied, grateful, and blessed. Therefore, what I would do is create a scene where I am lying on my bed in my pajamas feeling anxious, sweaty , crying, and incorporating mini dialogues in the shape of clouds as if they were my thoughts. While in the other part, I could draw my family and I together praying for the food that was served while we are all gathered at the table. Obviously, using colors, even using cotton for the pillows or the ice cream sticks for the table, but this depends on the student and their imagination.

For the lesson, I would start off with a Warm-Up by projecting a picture about an event that was occurring during the pandemic and ask the students how the picture makes them feel? What they think the picture is trying to express? What is the photographer trying to communicate to the audience? And lastly, who is the audience? Then we will have a class discussing about the warm up questions, for about 7-10 minutes. I will then clarify what the photographer was really trying to express with the photograph. Moving on, the class will learn about some of the statistics/outcomes of the pandemic, I will also mention some events that occurred throughout the time, not just about COVID-19. This will lead to an activity where there will be a bunch of pictures set up around the classroom and in a orderly manner, table by table, students will get up and choose one image that connects/ matches the way they felt during the pandemic, The student will go back to their desks and have 10-15 minutes to write a paragraph about their image and how they can relate to that picture and how it is a reflection of their feelings during the pandemic. Lastly, they will get into groups and share what they wrote.

Site Reference: https://www.instagram.com/surrealhk/

I will explain that art sometimes makes you feel understood, even about things that you do not believe others may relate to. I would connect this back and ask the students to describe an emotion that they were feeling during a difficult time in their life (like during the pandemic). There are images on this Instagram account displaying a man being followed by a bunch of surveillance cameras; I believe an image making such a statement must be discussed considering it portrays a message that most people feel they are being watched via the media. I will have my students find pictures that project loud statements that allow them to make connections through their minds; how they feel about the image and how they relate to it.

Analyze, interpret, and select artistic work for presentation.

Lesson:

The Main point of this lesson will be for students to express themselves through pictures. First students will get informed by the teacher of what sites they will be using find pictures to find that represent them. Students who want to use a different site have to ask the teacher first for approval to use the site a student recommended before using and finding pictures(think about the student!).

Next teacher will inform students about the rubric of the assignment which is to choose pictures around at least 5 to as many the student wants to do as the more the better the class gets to know about you. And after you find your pictures you will write around 5 plus sentences about each picture about how it relates to your life, examples can be about culture/history, community engagement, personal/family to this point in your life. Overall it can be a picture that is special to you and write why. When students have found there 5 plus pictures they will put them on google slides/ or print out pictures and post them on a board to present to the class later on for around 5-10 min each student.

Tips for students:

Some examples of pictures you can pick can be rated to what you like in life, what you appreciate, family, favorite sports/hobbies, etc

Be creative make and make it special make it unique

Ask away to the teacher for help!

Next students will be put into groups when finished with finding pictures that reflect who they are as well as reflects them right now. And they will share within groups of 4 (depends on class size) and students will comment on each others pictures and see what touches they can add to make it better if it is possible before they present to the class.

When students are presenting students listening are to take notes and treat the presenter how they will like to be treated when presenting. And at the end when everybody presents the class will reflect on what they learned from each other and what they liked from certain students’ presentations, what they had in common etc. In the end, students will know that arts rather bring people together than most people realize and can make relationships and more.

They can either bring objects or pictures to class and begin a presentation based upon it. Then students will be then asked to write their own meaning of what it means to be in their culture after hearing the rest of the students. Next students can gather in groups of either or more to make a short skit explaining each other's culture or conveying on a single one at the time being. This will be used as a form of communication between the students and let them express themselves freely upon what they think about their culture. After this, some students can volunteer to go to other classrooms and share the skit with the permission of fellow teachers and have their class ask questions about the skit. Some questions can be:
- Why did you choose to view your culture like that?
- Why did you use certain props?
etc.
After all, the students will then have a reflection on how they felt during their skits. presentations and be asked if they want to share with the class. With this, it begins a small (or so to be small) start of communication between the classrooms and the students about their lives and see each other comfortably. That they can ask questions about each other and not be bothered in a sort of way( although they shouldn't for the classroom is a safe space).

Students will discuss images and what they think about them. They will be shown a variety of images from the website and will discuss the different types of images and the meanings behind them. It will be explained that an image can have many meanings depending on the artist’s way of interpreting it.

The directions for the students is to take 3 pictures of something in their environment whether that be in your home or outside of your home that has provided you comfort in the past or even the present. Once the images have been collected students will write a brief description and explanation behind one of their three images that they are comfortable in sharing with the class. The lesson behind this is to demonstrate to students the different types of interests, cultures, and environments that their fellow students are surrounded by that bring them comfort and are using media artworks to share and represent this.
