Chase Fresneda-Quote of the week

I believe one way to motivate readers would be to pick a quote from a famous novel once a week. The instructor picks a famous quote and puts it in on the board. The instructor then reads the quote to the students. Ex:"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth." Chapter 1, pg. 1 The Catcher in the Rye. The class does a 5 minute inquiry into the quote discussing what they believe the meaning. The next step is the students will have to write the quote in their journals and research the book to discover which character said the quote. The instructor will have one hard copy on hand or make sure the library has the book for the students to research. This creates an opportunity for a child to actually open a book and see if it interest them enough to continue reading. This can also be adapted to where the teacher has the students pick out a novel and for a certain amount of weeks in a row the student must pick out at least 1 quote or theme per week and explain what is going on in the novel to the class. This holds the child accountable for their own reading standards as well as their responsibility to read.

Another way to motivate students to read is to have an upper level Reading or English class act as a reading club or society. their task will be to either weekly or monthly be a peer mentor reader to a much younger child in primary grades. Their goal is to help those children with their reading skills by motivating them through their time and energy, helping them with any words they may struggle with, and read to the children themselves. For younger children this excites them about reading if they see an older child as a role model reading. The hope is that it also inspires the older children themselves to continue reading more along their educational journey.

The teacher reads the students a book. The students will pick the main character(s) from the book that was read to them and create a sequel of their own. The exciting part of creating the sequel is the students are asked to create the sequel using their favorite cartoon characters, sports stars, video game characters, etc. The instructor will help with the writing process until the short story sequels are finished. Once the short stories are finished the students will turn them into the teacher, who will then type them up and pass them around to the class to read each other’s stories. The students are given a chance to have fun but also be motivated to read the new stories.

Kaleb Blocker – Engagement through Graphic Novels and Comic Books

One way to motivate someone to read is by having the children read something they are interested in. Staring at a page filled with words could be similar to staring at a brick wall for some readers, both overwhelming and boring. Comic books and graphic novels help influence creativity and get the child engaged in what they are reading. The bottom line of motivating readers is to get the students to actually read. If the instructor is able to influence the mind of readers through a comic book or graphic novel, then the instructor has motivated that child to read. Imagine you are an instructor to a Jr. High school literacy classroom and you have the students read a graphic novel of the story Beowulf. In standard text this could seem like a daunting assignment and pretty boring. Through this method the student will view it as less of an assignment but as an interesting read. The instructor could have meaningful discussions afterward that can incorporate the entire class.

One way to motivate readers is to have them roleplay the book they are reading. Roleplaying allows the reader to act out the book. It engages them and gives them something fun and exciting to do. It also gives the reader a better understanding of the book and can make the reader pay more attention while reading the book. There are several ways to engage in roleplay. My two favorites include having the student read the book then act out what they read and having the reader act the book out as they read. I prefer the first way because it allows the reader to focus on what is being read plus it allows the teacher to see how well they are understanding what they read.

Teachers can motivate readers by simply using their hands to stress the meanings of words. Readers will want to read more if they understand what they are reading or what is being read to them. So if the teacher will use hand gestures that demonstrate the meaning of words, the readers will pay more attention and want to read more since they understand what they are reading and know the meaning to more words. This video here shows an example of a teacher using her hands to stress the importance of word meanings to her students. She may not be reading from a book to them but she has their attention and they are gaining understanding from it. It works that same way for students when reading or being read to.

We can also share our reading experiences with them to give them reading strategies.
Teachers could also designate area for reading only and use it as an incentives for students as a reward for completing text reading. This area will be for reading or writing only. Students like having their own space and a choice of picking their reading material. Parents can start by reading a least 20 to 30 min with their child. Making sure that the child has a noise free zone to read in is also very important.

I believe the one of the hardest things for a parent would be helping their child with something that they do not do or have never done. It is sad when that "thing" is reading. I would have a reading night for the parents and children and ask them to come take a look around at some of the literacy that is in the classroom and start a dialogue to see what genre of books the parents enjoyed when they were younger. It would be interesting to see if children's interest match their parents. This article gives parents some apps to look at for children, I felt it was relevant because it would give parents some aid in helping develop their child's reading habits.

By pairing a strong reader with a struggling reader, the stronger reader listens while the struggling reader reads and corrects mistakes, when needed. When a correction is needed, both students students read the sentence in unison so that the struggling reader can develop a better understanding. Paired reading has been found to be significantly more effective than repeated reading.

I understand that this is sometimes just how things are due to space and budget constraints, but I want to try to have an area in my classroom meant for reading, with a couple of bookshelves set up perpendicular to the wall with bean bags between them on a carpet and fairy lights strung across the tops of the shelves. It will be an area that has to be earned, and it will be specifically for reading while any students are in it. I also want to assign, on rotation, a classroom librarian, whose job it is to maintain this area and care for it. It is my hope that such an addition to the classroom would create a love, or at least a respect, for reading. (Though I still need to work on my book collection, I do have quite a few children's books, comic books, and graphic novels that I want to stock this area with.)

When reading is interactive it becomes more engaging and less monotonous. By using labels on highlighters 1) They will always associate the same color with certain information thus creating a greater connection to what they are reading. 2) They will learn to pay closer attention to what they are reading which will help to improve comprehension.
I know for me that when I started using different colored highlighters (different colors for different thoughts and ideas as well as concepts) I was able to retain the information much better and instead of reading someting 4 or 5 times to remember what I was reading, I retained the information better the first time I was reading it. I also noticed, in myself, that if I couldn't remember detail I had wanted to remember, I was always able to remember the color associated with that thought or comment, and could skim just things highlighted in that color and find what I was looking for.

Something I always thought as motivating as readers, was a fun and relaxing area to read. If you make reading fun and interesting students are going to want to read. For example, have a corner with bean bags, chairs, recliners, pillows that is strictly for reading. If the students wants to use this corner they must be reading a book. Another way is to have a library of interesting fun topics the students in your class room with be interested in reading. If you keep them engaged and motivated your students will want to read. You can even incorporate technology into your libraries. You can use Ipads or any other tablet with downloadable books.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ01wrdDv-Y
