Reflections on the mock job fair

Round 1 - Undergraduates

A lot of jobs were not a good fit with our majors, but most of them were achievable, provided we leverage our non-curricular experience or tweak what we learn from our majors. Most of us got offers. A challenge we faced was that we did not know which companies who people are from, in reality during job fairs we would know where we would look for applicable and relevant places. Something that helped us was that it was easy to communicate with people through common interests, so it was a convenient inroad to discussion, showing the importance of networking.

Round 2 - Recruiters

The people we connected with are :

- Volunteer looking for recruits, Real-world experience, Internships

- ZUMBA company representative looking for social medial and dance, Employment, Internship

- Love Bonito - Employment

For strategies, when the company tells you what positions they are hiring for, you must tailor your pitch to fit the company's needs. You need to be proactive in order to be more hirable in the eyes of the company,

you need to ask what the company is looking for first before you do your pitch. If you don't, you might give irrelevant information to the job.

This was obviously helpful and a sensible thing to do as a jobseeker, but as Hongyi’s observations will show, its not something that people may remember to do.

Hongyi found that the Engineering and Science students have lots of achievements but they don’t really try to fit their experience with what the roles are looking for.

Nicholas found a data science student that explained how her skills were applicable to the organisation, and how their organisation can use her skills.

Reflections on Round 2:

Yu Fei is thankful that many people were looking for talent in software and AI which is what she was doing. She suggests people to talk about how your experience aligns with their job scope.

Xinling seized an opportunity for a mentorship. While the job offered was vague, she thought that the mentorship the company also offered would be helpful to further learn about the company and perhaps other available positions.

Strengths and weaknesses

When it comes to my strengths, I would say perseverance is one of my greatest advantages. Throughout my life, I’ve faced many different challenges and difficulties, but I always manage to find solutions rather than give up halfway. I believe that quitting too early often leads to worse outcomes, so this perseverance motivates me to push forward and keep learning. It has helped me develop valuable skills such as problem-solving, communication, and leadership, especially in group projects. I actually enjoy challenges and obstacles because they push me to grow, whether that’s improving my time management to meet deadlines or becoming more adaptable when working with different people.

Of course, I also have weaknesses. For example, I can sometimes become impatient when tasks are not completed within the expected time frame. This may cause me to put extra pressure on myself or my teammates. However, I’m learning to remind myself that everyone has their own pace, and as long as we meet the agreed deadlines, it is fine. Another area I’m working on is public speaking. Since most of my work has been with professors and teammates on research projects, I don’t have much experience presenting to larger audiences, so I may get nervous. Similarly, I’m still improving how I handle feedback, especially negative feedback or criticism. But I see these as opportunities for growth, and I actively work on confronting and overcoming them.

On the importance of academics, employability and social life in university: academics is obviously important, because GPA helps opens doors on graduation, and we think that at least in Singapore, technical ability is still valued (hence the focus on GPA), and so that also makes one more employable. Of course, another aspect is social life. Not only does socialising make life better and make people happier, the connections built is also a resource that one can take advantage of in the future. After all, helping each other out is win-win.

On the cyclical nature of the economy: losing your job is not the end of the world. Assuming you have the money, we opted to use this time to upskill and go to university while the market recovers. There is more to life than work.

On second chances:

Nicholas: "Exchange codes"

Ya Tian: "Choose randomly and life will work out; move fast"

Xinling: "Don't just accept the first job offer they give you"

Artistes: "Don't have kids"

Yufei: "Change jobs frequently"

Hongyi: "PhD really stands for permanent head damage"

What were the most significant career strategies I've learnt from the game? How will I apply these strategies to my real-life planning?

An undergraduate degree is a basic must have. Coupled with internships, those would help me get a good first job and great first starting salary. Afterwards, job performance and lifelong learning is important to get promoted and be recognised at work. And after a while, job hopping helps in salary jumps.

I aim to achieve a good GPA to secure and stack up relevant internships, making myself more hireable after graduation. Personal development is crucial for my first role, where I can grow. After gaining 3-5 years of experience in my first job, I aim to move into a managerial role. I might look into job hopping into another company if there is limited upside progression and if I want new challenges.
