I've been seeing colleagues use this time to contact students who are missing assignments and/or struggling in class.

I've already been using this time to intervene with students in individual breakout rooms and have required them to stay on until they have completed the missing assignment(s).

Instead of sending an email that may or may not be read, fellow counselors default to picking up the phone and reaching out in a positive, supportive way to a human that can support a student while involving students, too, as much as possible in these positive check-in conversations. Usually, these reveal that there may be other things going on that shed light on why the student isn't attending Zooms and/or not turning in work.

I usually give my students a short activity (<30 min) to do that enriches the unit that we are covering or providing support to students (vocab, etc.)

I have also used this time to hold office hours that the kids sign up for. They have liked this because it's not just random and they have been more likely to show up because they chose that time.

And lastly if I'm not pulled for a meeting then I check in with my kiddos who have been missing or failing and reach out to them, and once we reach the halfway point in the grading period I call home
