Thank you for your support in making reading FUN and exciting for your child.

4 ways to read with your child:

Choral Read- You read at the same time.

Echo Read- You read a sentence, your child echos the sentence.

Seesaw Read- Take turns reading each page!

Be the teacher- Pretend your child is the teacher. Call them, “Mr. or Miss.” Pretend you are the student!

Please model the following:

1. Read with expression! Act out feelings and movement!

2.

HOORAY! This week we completed our first full week of school! It was lovely to see so many of your faces at BTSN last night. Sra. Spallone and I truly appreciate your shared support and excitement for this new school year.

Have a great weekend!

Georgia Young

Reminders:

Please remember to fill out the information for the Class Contact List (remember, it is optional!). We will be emailing the completed list on Friday, September 20th for you all to have when organizing playdates and events.

Sign-Ups are open to be a guest reader/presenter in our classrooms this year! Please check the posts below for the link.

Classlink sign-in information and Quickcards are being sent home with all students today.

Reading

This week, students practiced choosing "just right" books to fill their book baggies by using multiple strategies, such as the 5-finger rule and listening for fluency and understanding. We also reviewed the qualities of good reading by creating a classroom chart. Finally, your third graders listened to read-alouds that promote growth mindset ("The Magical Yet" and "Beautiful Oops"). We will refer to these throughout the year.

Writing

This week in writing, students worked hard on brainstorming, writing, and illustrating their hopes and dreams for third grade. They are now displayed outside our classroom and will remain up in our room for the remainder of the year to reflect on! Students also worked on beginning their first page of their Writer's Notebook: their "heart map". They will refer to this throughout the year for writing ideas.

Readers of mysteries need to identify what the mystery is and who is/are the crime solver(s). As our class has begun reading our first mystery novel, “The Absent Author,” we have been paying close attention to clues within the text which may help solve the book’s mystery. Students also learned new genre-specific vocabulary with a hands-on matching game. Ask your child to share what a “red herring” or “accomplice” is 😉

Writing- Students are continuing to write drafts of their small moment/personal narrative stories in their writers’ notebooks. They began personal “word walls” which they will keep in their writing folders throughout the year. Students learned that they can refer to this tool, along with their narrative rubric/checklist, to set and achieve their writing goals! We are working on building greater independence and ownership of work during the writing process.

Sra. Students began reading their own assigned mystery novels, now applying the strategies they’ve learned about reading mysteries. This week’s focus was on collaborating with a co-detective (partner) to share clues found in the text and other suspicious findings as they read. Please note- Students are assigned chapters that need to be completed daily. If they do not finish reading these chapters during the time provided in class, they are expected to bring their book home to finish them during their nightly reading time. Thank you for your support in keeping your student on-track!

Writing and Phonics- Students’ personal narratives are making their way through the writing process! Now, students are focusing their time on revising and editing to move their pieces towards publishing. You can ask your student to share what they know about using a “storytelling” voice as a writer. You can also encourage your child to jot down new words they hear and see outside of school. Consider creating a “Word Collector” list that can hang up on your fridge at home. We are integrating this phonics strategy into our writing by looking at beautifully detailed mentor texts such as “Come On, Rain!” by Karen Hesse and “Fireflies!” by Julie Brinckloe.

Reminders:

All parents are welcome to watch the 3rd grade Halloween Parade on October 31 at 10:25 AM. It is weather permitting. If it rains, there will be no Halloween Parade.

Our Fall Party will be immediately following the parade from 10:30-11:30! Parent volunteer slots have all been filled now- yay! The Sign-Up Genius forms are now closed. Thank you for all of your generous contributions to our parties.

Food Permission Slips for Ms. Young’s Class are due Wednesday, 10/30!

Please remember to read the Halloween Parent Letter sent to you via email and also shared in a previous Padlet post. Here are some highlights:

Students should bring their costumes to school in a bag with their name on it. They should be able to slip their costume on over their clothes. We will not have time to send all students to the bathrooms to change prior to our parade and party.

No weapons, toy guns, swords, etc. will be permitted

Dexter Patrol applications are due ASAP. Per Mrs. Lee, Patrol will be beginning at the start of November.

WW-P Schools Closed Friday, Nov. 1, 2024

WW-P Schools Closed Thursday, Nov. 7, and Friday, Nov. 8, 2024

Wednesday, Nov. 20: Picture Day. Both classes will be taking individual and group photos at 11:00 AM on this day.

Reading- As we progress through our final shared mystery novel, “The Whodunit Detective Agency: The Diamond Mystery,” students have been on the lookout for red herring clues (aka false clues) that expert mystery writers may use to steer readers in the wrong direction. Students have also been independently exploring a wider range of mystery novels using Epic!, our digital library resource.

Writing and Phonics- As students continue to publish their first (and second!) final copies of their small moments stories, this week we had a focus on making intentional and accurate edits using an acronym known as “C.U.P.S.” Students practiced editing multiple types of writing for Capitalization, Understanding (does it make sense?), Punctuation, and Spelling. Students focused on proper usage of quotation marks and commas in dialogue. Finally, your third grader learned that there is a wide range of verbs that can be used in dialogue tags (subject + verb) that precede or follow dialogue!

Spallone, myself, and all of our third graders, THANK YOU for your attendance in American Education Week on Monday. We appreciate the time you sacrificed out of your day to participate in our classrooms. The students were so excited! Our hallways are now proudly displaying the turkey math projects from Sra. Spallone’s lesson and the balloon designs from my lesson, based on the book “Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet. For those of you who could not make it, we also appreciate you and will share photos of the projects under the “Photos” section on Padlet!

Have a fantastic weekend,

Ms. Young

Reminders:

DLI T-Shirts on sale now until Dec. 6th! Students set updated goals for themselves while reading nonfiction and learned how to decide on personal “tasks” that will hold them accountable for achieving these goals as they read independently. For example, if your goal is to get better at teaching others what you learned, you can task yourself with placing sticky notes on important parts of the text to point out to your reading partner as you share.

Writing- Students are in the drafting and revision stages of their informational writing pieces! We took a closer look at how to make introductions more exciting and effective. You can introduce a topic with a question, fact, or description.

Phonics- Both teams focused on the CVCe spelling pattern this week, looking at how this pattern affects multisyllabic words (ex: hopeful).

Happy New Year! We hope you had a very joyous and refreshing holiday season. Sra. Spallone and I are very happy to see your third graders back in school this week. Within our classrooms, it has brought a smile to our faces to hear the students share about their adventures over break and greet their classmates with excitement upon their return.

Keep warm and have fun this weekend!
Ms. Young

Reminders:

Early Dismissal Days on Thursday 1/16 and Friday 1/17 - Please remember to send your student in with a “snunch” to eat on these days as the cafeteria will be closed. Dismissal begins at 1:00 PM.

The conferences on these days are by teacher request. We have sent emails to those we are requesting conferences with. Thank you.

Orange PTA newsletter flyers were sent home in students’ Take Home Folders on Wednesday, 1/8.

Monday, Jan. 20, 2025: All WW-P schools and offices are closed.

Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2025: All WW-P schools are closed.

Please continue updating Genesis and/or notifying ourselves and the front office with anticipated absences and dismissal changes. We really appreciate your thorough communication for smooth dismissals.

Reading- This week we began our next reading unit, “Character Studies.” In the upcoming lessons, students will dig deeper into understanding characters by exploring their traits, motivations, challenges, and the lessons they learn. This study of characters helps readers grasp the text better and think more critically about what was read.

Writing- We launched our latest writing unit, Opinion Writing: Changing the World! To begin, students worked together as a class to plan a persuasive speech which contains a claim, three reasons, and supporting examples or evidence for each reason. They are now beginning their idea generation process.

Phonics- Students practiced identifying and writing subject (noun) and predicate (contains the verb) within sentences, making sure to always remember uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences and ending punctuation. We will continue to build upon this foundation as we create more detailed and complex sentences in phonics and writing classes.

We are continuing our class read aloud of Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet and studying the more complex layers of the characters. Students are reading in their own just-right novel of choice to apply this character work.

Writing- Students are making excellent progress on their opinion/persuasive writing pieces! At this point, students have generated an opinion (claim) and planned their writing using a graphic organizer. They learned to use the acronym “O.R.E.O.” to organize their writing: Opinion (claim/introduction), Reason and Example (in each of their 3 body paragraphs), and Opinion (re-stated in the conclusion). Using this formula, students set themselves up for a focused and successful opinion piece!

We also discussed the different roles that secondary characters play in a story.

Writing- Now that all students are through the planning phase, they are crafting strong paragraphs for their opinion speeches. They are using a checklist to self-identify goals for themselves at the beginning of each writing period and hold themselves accountable for third grade-level opinion writing. Lastly, students put their editing skills to the test to edit Ms. Young’s writing! Students should edit as they write rather than at the very end of the writing process.

Phonics- Students practiced expanding their predicates (verbs) by writing with prepositions (on, behind, next to, around) which adds more detail to their sentences.

These assigned “clubs” are groups of 4-6 classmates. Students independently read their copies of the same book then meet with each other to discuss and complete activities which further their understanding of the story and its characters. This week, students worked in their groups to create an appropriately paced 5-day reading plan for their books. As a class, we wrapped up our read aloud “Planet Omar” with a discussion on character change and lessons learned. Finally, students worked in their book clubs to focus on gathering evidence to support character traits for characters in their books. For book clubs to be effective, students need to complete their assigned chapters for their nightly reading if they are absent or unable to complete these during the time given in class. Students must remember to return their book club book back to school the following day so they don’t fall behind their group.

Writing- This week, students continued writing their drafts for their persuasive speeches. They learned that they must select reasons and examples that effectively convince their selected audience when finished.

Phonics- Students practiced writing sentences with a variety of predicate expanders, including prepositions (where?), adverbs (how?), and time (when?) to expand upon their original subject (noun) and predicate (verb).

Unfinished posters will be sent home in students' take-home folders today.

Thank you for your understanding and support. This short 3-week unit began with readings and class discussions to understand the importance of being respectful of others’ unique identities by reflecting on our own identities. We brainstormed using kind words and questions to ask others to get to know more about who they are on the outside.

Writing- We began a mini unit on Poetry this week.

Hi, 3rd grade DLI families!

We’ve made it to May which feels like the home stretch of the school year. Can you believe it? Sra. Spallone and I are cherishing these last two months as your children's teachers. The end of third grade brings responsibility, excitement, special memories, and bittersweet moments as your students get ready to move on from Dutch Neck. We thank you for your continued support and communication.

Your third graders have worked very hard at NJSLA each day this week.

Good morning, 3rd grade families!

First, Sra. Spallone, Sra. Sanchez, and I would like to extend our gratitude for the teacher appreciation cards, treats, and love we received from the students this week. We are touched by your generosity and kindness. It is a privilege to be entrusted with the education and care of your children.

What we’re learning…

Reading- We began reading a new book as a class called Ways to Make Sunshine by Renee Watson. Our current “Social Issues” unit is about reading with the purpose of learning life lessons. Students learned that they can preview a book by reading the back blurb. Then, they can predict the challenges and life lessons that the characters might encounter as they continue to read the book.

Writing- Students began planning their “baby literary essays”! They learned that an essay should have an introduction paragraph with a short summary of the story and a claim/thesis, 2 body paragraphs with text evidence and explanation, and a conclusion paragraph.

Phonics- Students practiced the 1-1-1 rule for doubling a consonant before adding a suffix such as -ed, -ing, or -est. If a one-syllable word ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel, the final consonant should be doubled before adding a vowel suffix. For example: “run” becomes “running.”

Reminders:

Tic-Tac-Toe HW boards are due tomorrow!

Tomorrow, Friday, May 9: Spring Book Fair at Barnes & Noble in Market Fair from 4–6 p.m.! This week, we talked about the idea of making connections and developing empathy through what we read using the concept of "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors." In addition, students began their Social Issues Book Clubs! Like in previous units, students meet with their fellow book club members to discuss the chapters and complete activities which further their understanding of the story and its characters. This week, students worked in their groups to create an appropriately paced 5ish-day reading plan for their books. If students are absent or do not complete their assigned chapters in class, they’ll need to complete these chapters and jots as part of their nightly reading homework. Students must remember to return their book club book and their “stop and jot” sheet back to school the following day so they can participate in their group’s discussion.

Writing- Students are now drafting their “baby literary essays”! This week, they learned that they have to choose textual evidence carefully and ask themselves, “Is this evidence an example that supports my thesis?”.

Phonics- Students are continuing to practice the “Three Great Spelling Rules”: the doubling rule (doubling the final consonant of one-syllable words before adding a vowel suffix), the e-drop rule (dropping the silent “e” when adding a vowel suffix), and the change rule (changing “y” to “i” before adding a vowel suffix, unless the suffix starts with 'i').

Reminders:

Tic-Tac-Toe HW boards 3.4 are due next Thursday, 5/22.

Grounds for Sculpture Field Trip Permission Slips (Tuesday, June 10, for Blue Team/Spallone OR Wednesday, June 11, for Red Team/Young) - Orange permission slips sent home 5/15.
