-This was a more practical lecture where Dr.Wesley O’Brien ran through some
ideas as to how we could introduce resistance training into our mentee’s
programme.
-These ideas are easy to carry out and could provide a more suitable challenge to
those mentees who are slightly more active and are able to perform more
challenging exercises.
-These exercises included the introduction of small weights as well as using the 8
major muscle groups which may not have been activated in a while depending on
your mentee’s ability/previous exercise.
-This was followed by a recap on the highs and lows of the club to this date and
our opinions on it through the use of a questionnaire which proved to be quite
useful as it charted the many success that we had to this point as well as
recognising the challenges that we faced.
-We also did some more work on what our assignment would entail and were
introduced to Padlet, an online tool which can be used to group together various
documents and types of documents under one title which is useful for an
assignment such as ours.
-We also went through some roleplays of situations we may face with a wide
range of mentees. We were shown how to solve such issues in a friendly and
empathic manner.

-The class was divided into 3 groups where we took part in 3 different elements
that we could use in our mentee’s programme.
-Firstly, we did the mile run test which tests how fast you can run a mile. Times
are then used to see how fit you are. This is used at the beginning of the training
programme to give a base to work from and to judge improvements in your
mentee’s fitness.
-Next up was a demonstration by Gillian of a few core exercises that your mentee
could use. This is important because the core region can be a weaker area for
people who are unfit, and weight carried in the midriff is more likely to cause
chronic diseases in the future.
-Finally, we were given another demonstration by a member of the Maradyke staff
on how to use the various machines available in their gym which it is highly
recommended that our mentee’s use as part of their programmes if they are able
for a higher level of training.
-We were given demonstrations on the use of the cardiovascular machines. These
focus on giving you a good workout where you are likely to be tired and taping into

your anaerobic system which will improve fitness over time.
-The second types of machines that we were shown were the resistance
machines. These help to incorporate a weight making it harder for a particular
muscle group to complete the exercise. This can be used for those mentee’s who
are already at a good level of activity and fitness.

-During this class, we were introduced to the new concept of design thinking which
builds upon design sprint which we used at the beginning of the club.
-We then looked at ways to become more empathetic to our mentees. This was
done by looking at and discussing the characteristics of the current generation,
generation Z and generation Alpha, through Mark McCrindle’s numerous diagrams
on this as well as watching a video about Blooms digital taxonomy.
-Following this, we answered a series of questions about the club including the
highlights and lowlights of the club so far, the best ways to get new mentees, etc.
We wrote these answers individually on sticky notes and stuck them on our
groups section of the wall.
-We looked at all of our ideas and collapsed them into 3 categories to attempt to
summarise what we had done. Our 3 categories were training programme
essentials, good mentee/mentor characteristics and methods of gaining new
mentees as an example.
-Finally, we were given a brainstorming sheet where we answered questions on
how our ideas were going to benefit the club functionally, emotionally and
generally.
-These activities were extremely beneficial to us as a class because it allowed us
to evaluate the club’s qualities and flaws and it improved our skills as a mentor
because we are now better able to understand our mentees and their mindsets.

-In this class we were introduced to a data input website which can showed us the
most used words in our feedback on the programme so far both from a positive
and negative point of view. This was interesting because it showed how the class
were feeling
-We also viewed more data input apps and sites such as canva.

-We then reviewed our discussion on design thinking from last week and the
stages of it including empathy, ideation and checking to see if ideas work amongst
others.
-We also reviewed our points on how people are different now to how they were
even 10 years ago. Companies are looking for people who can find and solve
problems
-We then answered more questions in our groups and individually about the
programme in terms of the qualities a perfect mentee and mentor would have and
the qualities of a good training programme. This was interesting because it
allowed us to figure out what we wanted from the programme from both ourselves
and our mentees and just how close or far away we are from achieving that.
-We also compared our ideas with the rest of the group and collapsed these ideas
into 3 categories. This was beneficial because it allowed us to get someone else’s
point of view.

-Today we continued in our design sprint phase of the programme. We firstly
presented a template of our Made2Move plan. Our group used the website Eazily.
- We then discussed the data collected from the previous weeks work where we
showed the various qualities needed for a mentor, how we’ll recruit mentees & the
important characteristics of the club.
- Mentee recruitment: over 18, they need to be motivated to make a change and
that they are not currently meeting physical activity guidelines. We also decided
that it would be better for us to get a mentee that we already know with these
characteristics to give us the best chance of retaining them
- Mentor characteristics: leadership potential, enthusiastic, resourceful, some
physical activity knowledge, motivated to help and meeting physical activity
guidelines.
- One of the concerns raised was our absence of leadership qualities so in order
to solve this we discussed the qualities of leadership we believed we needed and
using information from the Irish Management Institute we discussed using a
brainstorm what a leadership programme would look like to us.
- We also discussed how compassion is a better quality then empathy because

you will be able to come up with a solution if you’re compassionate whereas if
your empathetic you will just understand the problem and not come up with a
solution
- Following this we discussed the definition of social distance which is the distance
between two groups. This is an important thing to understand for us as the
mentees are very different to us so in order to understand them, we have to break
down the social distance
