2. Learning Experiences: Share 3-4 links to learner-centered classroom activities for the first few nights. Make sure they promote active learning and belonging, and connect to adult learning theories.

3. Belonging and Adult Learners: Reflect on the importance of belonging for adult learners. Use relevant adult learning theory concepts and explain how your activities from Section 2 support belonging. Add text, images, or videos as needed.

Belonging in adult learning is essential, especially when we consider Maslow’s hierarchy, which explains our actual needs, many of which include love, belonging, safety, self-actualization, and esteem. We can provide many of these needs by simply being mindful of them and designing our classes with these in mind. For many adult learners, seeking an education after a break or life changes can be a trying time, which can be the springboard concrete experience needed for tremendous growth (as explained in the transformative learning theory). As teachers, we can facilitate this learning and help our students reach their goals, but they must know they belong, have support, and are capable.
