Once the sketch was completed, I began refining it using an isometric graph. However, the outcome appeared a bit dull, so I decided to further develop it and add more details. Afterward, I cleaned up the lines and checked if I was satisfied with the silhouette.

Thinking about the content for my final drawing, I spent a lot of time looking for the best way to acquire a useful skill by going deeper into one of the techniques learned in class. Eventually, I made up my mind that isometric illustration was a great choice for me as a future visual communication designer. Besides an isometric style, I used skills of transferring a hand-drawn illustration into a digital one and ideas generation approach learned on week 5. Used mediums are pencil, brush for sketching, brush for a clean line, selection with the lasso tool and filling, airbrush and textured brush.

It piqued my interest even more when I remembered a beautifully designed video game called Monument Valley that was made in an isometric style. Each level in that game has a unique design and looks like a little floating island or a castle, which fascinated me.

I decided to imagine myself designing a level concept for a game as well. This idea also explains my choice to use digital software (Procreate) for the final render. For my drawing, I wanted to create a composition that was a little more dynamic than isometric projections usually are, so I decided to break some rules of this approach by adding more organic shapes and changing the orientation of some objects.

The illustrated piece of land is floating, powered by crystals created by an unknown alien civilization. Many years ago, several crystal-powered devices were thrown away on uninhabited lands and, where they broke, they lifted a piece of land into the sky.

Besides graphic design, I am also very interested in game design and concept design. One day, I might pursue a career in this industry, and during this week, I took the first step in that direction.

Final reflection

Over the trimester, I significantly expanded the range of my drawing skills as I discovered something new every week. After practicing various techniques, I feel much more confident in drawing, and most importantly, I believe my ability to communicate ideas through drawing has improved considerably. I also learned new ways to leverage drawing in my studying and design practice.

I take pride in presenting my creativity in the final drawing. After a prompt drawing activity and a TED lecture we watched in class, there was a shift in my mindset, and I realized that drawing from imagination was easier than I thought, and practicing it can be helpful in many ways. I am happy that I could come up with a concept for a little world all by myself. The only thing I would do differently if I were to do this drawing again is to use more geometry to showcase interesting isometric effects.

The biggest challenge throughout the trimester and the final assignment for me was using my imagination for idea generation, and I am happy to feel that it is easier for me now. I also felt uncomfortable trying different mediums before the course, and now I understand that there is significant potential in experimenting with different materials.

The conclusion I have reached about drawing practice is that it is a language, and one needs to be consistent in practice and overcome new challenges to become fluent in this language. Similar to any other language, it expands your communication abilities and allows you to experience and understand the world more deeply and vividly.
