It came to be in 1948 when the all white government at the time began enforcing old racial segregation.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He was given this award because he peacefully terminated the apartheid regime and laid the foundations for a new democratic South Africa. Mandela in the last 40 years of his life had received over 250 awards. Including an Olympic Gold Order, which is the highest award the Olympic committee can give.</div>]]></description>

The name 'Nelson' was given to him at Wesleyan mission when he first attended. By the election in 1999 he had retired from politics, and then in 2004 to retire from public life and return to his hometown Qunu, after having to leave it when he was 9.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a child, Mandela lived in a very small village in South Africa where there were no roads and lived in huts. Mandela's father died in 1927, which left him under the care of his father's cousin, who sent him to be enrolled at Clarkebury for his education. Once completed there he went to Healdtown Methodist boarding school for a high school education. This made him the first in his family to do so.</div>]]></description>
