Once he was there he began trading with the locals there the locals where not very happy though that he wanted to claim it for spain.... however he did not treat the locals very well and was later put to jail. on the way back home Santa Maria hit a reef and was wrecked. The other two ships made it home safely. Columbus went back to save his men but by that time, they had all died..
