Sally quickly gets Percy and Grover on the road using her husband's car (which he cares too much about) and as the drive goes on, Percy and Grover realize they are being chased by the minotaur, a large, bull-like beast. The minotaur ends up chasing them into crashing, and the group of three runs into the woods.

To save her son, Sally distracts the Minotaur with Percy's clothes and tells him to run away with Grover. She ends up getting caught by the Minotaur and sacrificing herself. This of course, infuriates Percy.

Percy gets into a standoff with the Minotaur, uncapping the special pen his history teacher gave him. It turns into a shiny bronze sword. He begins to attack the Minotaur, and his sword is knocked away from him. However, he manages to rip off the horn of the Minotaur, defeating it.

Percy miraculously ends up at Camp Half-Blood after defeating the Minotaur, and he is a big conversation around camp. After he explores the camp, he discovered Luke and Annabeth, who invite him to join their team in capture the flag.

The capture the flag game starts, and Annabeth splits away from Percy. Percy gets into a standoff with Clarisse, who is basically a second Nancy. He wins the standoff somehow managing to get from the forest all the way to the beach front by breaking the spear Clarisse's father, Ares, God of war, gave her. His team wins capture the flag with his distraction. Annabeth becomes visible after taking off the cap her mother, Athena, goddess of wisdom and battle strategy, gave her. She had been watching him throughout the whole fight.

Annabeth shoves Percy into the water, and his wounds miraculously heal. Percy then finds out he is the son of one of the big three. Specifically, the son of the sea God, Poseidon.

Percy is given a quest to go on to retrieve Zeus's stolen master bolt, and he must choose two people to go with him. He reluctantly and forcefully agrees to the quest, knowing he can save his mother who is stuck in the underworld. He chooses Annabeth and Grover to go with him after what the Oracle tells him.

The three stop at Aunt Em's, who just so happens to be Medusa. She at first offers them lunch, but then tries to kill them. Percy ends up beheading Medusa and shipping the head to Mt. Olympus.

The trio make their way to the Lotus Hotel, where time goes faster and Grover gets entranced by eating a lotus flower. Annabeth and Percy stray off from him and end up finding Hermes, who directs them to the underworld. The two realize they lost Grover and attempt to get him out of his trance by dragging him away from the hotel. It works, but when they exit, they realize there is only one day left for them to return the lost lightning bolt to Zeus.

After Hermes tells the trio to make their way to a mattress shop to get to the underworld, they do. There, Percy meets his older half-brother who traps all three kids in his mattress traps. Luckily, Percy manages to get them all out of their traps and he traps his elder brother in a mattress. The three make their way to the underworld.

After making their way into the underworld, the three encounter Cerberus, a massive three-headed dog monster. To get past, they have to either be dead or tame the dog. Annabeth has a red ball that she uses to calm Cerberus down, and he lets them pass.

After they get past Cerberus, Grover and Percy are almost dragged into Tartarus by a strong energy and Grover's flying shoes. Luckily, Percy helps him get the shoes off, and Percy hears a ringing sound from his bag. He looks inside to see the master bolt hiding in his bookbag.

After the master bolt is found, the group makes their way to Hades castle. There, they confront Hades, and Percy sees his mother as a golden statue. Hades says he does not want the master bolt, but he wants his helm that Ares had stolen. Percy realizes he had been betrayed by Ares, and the two have to get to Mt. Olympus as fast as possible despite not making their deadline. Percy makes Hades promise to return his mother.

The group make it back to the beach, and Percy decided he will go to Mt. Olympus alone to deal with his business. After delivering the bolt to Zeus, Percy is almost murdered by him but is protected by his father, Poseidon. Poseidon surrenders from the war and asks Zeus to leave his son alone. Zeus luckily agrees, and Percy is sent home after a talk with his dad.

When Percy is brought back to the beach, he is greeted by Annabeth, Grover, and Ares. Percy decides he will fight Ares for the helm, and Ares somewhat agrees. Using his water powers, Percy wins the fight and Ares declares himself as an enemy for life to Percy. When Ares disappears, Hades' helm is left behind. Percy is eventually able to turn in the helm to Hades through "Mrs. Dodds" and he is able to go back home where his mother will be waiting for him. Percy is declared a hero at camp half-blood, but many are jealous of his success.

After camp, Percy is finally sent home to his mom, who is safe and sound. He continues to have dreams, but Sally discusses them with Percy and comforts him by continuing to make his favorite thing, blue food. Percy is now ready to start middle school.
