- Think-Pair Share

-Turn and Talk

-Reading Strategies

Think-Pair-Share is a technique I use everyday in all of my content areas taught where students can think about a guided question, and pair up with another student to share ideas and thoughts about the topic. Students are encouraged to use vocabulary from the week and are given options to enhance discussion to include sticky notes, markers, and small dry erase boards to collect ideas.

Turn and Talk is strategy where students talk collaboratively on the rug during whole group instruction about an essential idea or topic the teacher poses. Students are to use appropriate manners by listening to their partner, and talking politely together.

Their are several other reading strategies I use and I am going to post some pictures of the anchor charts I use daily in my classroom and examples of student created anchor charts for discussion.

Schools are becoming more diverse as families from all over the world are making the decision to move to the United States for better education and opportunities. As educators in our teacher preparation programs and in our personal experiences we are taught to be open-minded and to not be subjective. I am using this Padlet to provide resources and links of information for elementary educators which they can use in their classrooms to encourage diversity interactions and educational outcomes for all students regardless of race, socioeconomic status, and education. We must understand that our perceptions can affect our interactions with student populations. Diversity includes all students all we are all different in some way this may include language, religion, family cultures, socioeconomic status, and educational opportunities. I will also share with you ideas and practices I currently use in my Second Grade classroom.

During whole group and small group instruction teachers can gear vocabulary building strategies to help ELL students and those with Below Grade Level Reading scores. In whole group reading instruction I allow students to read aloud, listen to text read aloud and focus on key details such as vocabulary. Vocabulary building strategies include word breaking, chunking, and sounding out a word. In small group instruction I include students with peers that have similar reading levels together in small groups of two to six students which provides opportunities for the teacher to provide running records on students to see how their reading fluency improves, and what they need more practice with. Below are pictures taken from my classroom.

Diversity: We as educators have to acknowledge our own cultural biases and have similar goals and higher order thinking skills for all of our students. If you challenge your students to dig deeper then they will succeed; don't limit them to just the who, what, where, when, why, and how. Encourage them to dig deeper and to demonstrate their understanding through hands on literacy tasks.

Doi:
10.1080/03075070903414305

Gordan et. al (2010) research examined professors' concepts of learning and teaching thinking about student diversity. The study examined three hierarchical conceptions to include ignore, compensate, and utilize. Ignoring was related to Professors' carrying out normal teaching goals and activities while ignoring their own cultural biases. Compensating included modifying instruction to enhance the learning outcomes for a diverse student population. They would offer supplemental materials, time for examination and other ideas. Utilizing included being strong in pedagogical theory while taking note of the diverse student population.

Chris, A. (2012, October 2).
