Differentiation shows that teachers value their students, since the materials/resources/lesson is intentionally taught or given to specific learners based on their interests, academic needs, etc. Teachers should differentiate to allow students to move at their own pace and level.

Teachers get more effective and involved education for students. Students come to the classroom with many different experiences, interests and readiness levels. So by adapting what we teach and how we teach can better capture interest and attention from our students as well as fitting their own personal educational needs.

One reason teachers should differentiate their instruction is to help address the diverse learning needs. Within one classroom, there are tons of different needs of students. Students come into the classroom already having tons of different ways of learning. They also learn and develop at different rates. Being able to accommodate all of these different things will help all of your students get a fair chance at understanding content

It can promote the concept of equity and inclusion. Not all students come from the same background of knowledge. Differentiating your instruction can help close gaps with students who have learning disabilities, English language learners, and even gifted students.

It can also promote student engagement. If a student has education tailored specifically to them, it's going to make them want to participate more because it will be more accessible for them in a number of ways

1) Knowledge can be expressed in more than one way. Allowing students more than one way to show their knowledge provides more students with academic success.

2) Not all student learns the same way. Some instruction strategies aren't engaging for all students, so instructing in multiple ways provides a better chance that you reach each student in your classroom.

3) As you use multiple instructional strategies, not only are you reaching a higher percent of your students, but you're providing a deeper understanding for each student. They are able to engage with content in more than one way, making their understanding firmer.

Teachers should differentiate instruction to meet students where they are at. In today's schools there are many students struggling to keep up with the fast and intense pace of the curriculum. Teachers should be flexible enough to meet their students needs while still challenging them.

Teachers should be able to have differentiated assessments and assignments for students. By doing this you can give students the opportunity to choose what they would like to do and they will more then likely enjoy it more and get something out of it.

Lastly teachers should have different strategies to help students understand the subject or topic. Not everyone understands the way the curriculum wants it taught. By having different strategies you can help any students understand the topic or subject.

Not all students learn at the same rate. Students might come into your 3rd-grade classroom at a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th-grade level. It is important to differentiate instruction and materials for these students so they can get the support that best fits their needs.

Students will also have different learning styles. For example, one of my students prefers to learn while sitting close to the board. Another prefers to learn at their own table until it is time for group work. Personally, I can't learn something as easily unless I am actually the one doing it. I prefer to learn using hands-on strategies, but I know my friend prefers to learn through lectures.

Students come from all kinds of different backgrounds. Their background plays a major role in determining their interest. Interest in a lesson is a key factor in engagement in the classroom. By differentiating lessons/assignments so they fit the needs of your students' interests, you are keeping them engaged and connecting the lesson to a real-life scenario. This also makes it more likely that the student will remember what is being taught.

All of these reasons are simply reasons to make adjustments in daily tasks that fit the needs of ALL learners, not just most learners. Using differentiation still challenges students in the classroom. In fact, it should challenge them more than typical instruction.
