Some of our students don't have much nature exposure at home on their own. I know kids who have never camped, hiked, gone to the beach. So, it's really important that schools provide literal "field" trips and do the "falling in love" activities on those trips. That will make memories of nature for our kids who otherwise have meaningful interactions with nature.

We've been wondering about water flow. How much seasonal variation is there in volume of flow in our local creeks? How do dammed rivers compare to rivers where the dam has been removed? My school will be participating in Ocean Day soon. Thinking some inquiry questions along the lines of "How can we prevent beach pollution?" or "What are invasive species?" could lead to many, many different PBL projects. Math (charts, graphs, ratios, etc.) and ELA could be incorporated, as well as public service learning. Students could volunteer to pick up beach trash, raise funds for more beach trash cans, etc.

Outdoor Education Program

A teacher at my school, Northern United Charters Cutten Learning Center, started an Outdoor Education Program for 5th-7th grade students this year and will be continuing it next school year. Twice a week, students go on field trips to engage with nature to places like Moonstone, Sequoia Park, Headwaters, etc. and participate in PBL projects.
