The Synthesis project asks you to "use this synthesis project to think deeply about college writing, navigating college life, and the ways that reading, writing, and belonging intersect, especially during an unprecedented time like the COVID-19 pandemic."

As a group, describe the 2-3 most promising conversation threads you have identified. You should: 1) name a specific conversation thread, 2) briefly describe the conversation thread and why it is promising, 3) identify the source texts that could support an exploration of the conversation.

This thread is promising as Nathan's and Brooker's article identifiy difficulties that students report having during their first-year of college. They seem to be suggesting that students often feel like they don’t “fit into” the college setting. For example in Nathan’s chapter, he explains that some students don’t feel comfortable sharing out loud in class.

The sources that could be used are: Brooker's “First Year Students’ Perceptions…” and Rebekah Nathan’s “My Freshman Year”;

The trend is promising because it is a broad concept that can address any difficulties that undergraduate students can face. Examples from Brooker et el. are time management, work-load, family, health, others' expectations, and etc. It can also highlight ways that writing can provide an outlet for students to overcome their difficulties.
Depending on the type of difficulties, academic difficulites can target an audience of educators, tutors, workshop facilitators. Social difficulties can target another audience of school counselors, therapists, and success coaches.
To support the exploration of difficulties souces like Brooker et al. "First Year Students' Perception of Their Difficulties", Morris's "Helping Students Cope with COVID-19", and Flaherty's "Writing to Belong".

-------------
The outside life is promising because it's said that college students feel the need to feel the sense of belonging and to be socially accepted. For example, Pham gives the lens through the beach cruiser and speaks on discrimination and why students sort each other out. She gives a spotlight on something you don't often recognize or see.
Possible audiences would be students, undergraduates, organizations who help students with students "finding themselves."
---------
-Source
*Pham's "Beach Cruisers"
* Rebekah Nathan's "My Freshman Year
*Brooker's et el "First Year Students' Perceptions
*

This thread would talk about the different ways college students are supported during college and the resources given to them.
-We found this thread promising because it can uses a lot of the material we have read, which provides more than enough sources to expand the information. In addition, with these sources, different topics can arise. The audience can possibly be faculty at UC Davis, including professors and the Chancellor.
-Sources:
*Flaherty’s “Writing to Belong"

 *Brooker's “First Year Students’ Perceptions…”
*Miller and Schulz’s “University Literacy”

The audience would be the faculty and Chancellor of the university.
Sources that can support this are Miller and Schulz's "University Literacies" and Flaherty's "Writing to belong" articles because they talk about a framework to bridge the gap of transitioning students (Miller and Schulz ) and writing to get them to feel more connected to the campus (Flaherty).

One thread our group considered was the transition to college. How it can be challenging with or without a pandemic. College is a completely different territory with all these different expectations and one might experience a culture shock. This thread is something highly to consider since there is a vast amount of people who will be crossing that line soon and need the extra reassurance to be prepared when the time comes. Some resources that will be illustrated in the paper are: Rebekah Nathan’s “My Freshman Year”; Abi B Sarah B and Jeanette Lawrence’s “First Year’s Students Perceptions of their Difficulties”; and none other than Colleen Flaherty’s “Writing to Belong”.

For those who didn't get the memo yet, the intended audience is college freshmen, maybe some helicopter parents if they're interested.

Who's job is it to support students in the era of COVID-19? Is it up to the students to help themselves or is it up to the institution?
Two articles that support my synthesis projects are, Morris's and McMullin's articles. Both articles insist in taking action.

Our group decided that in all of our writing COVID-19 seemed to emerge. We were all able to tie in this pandemic into our synthesis exploration. Being first-year college students its already tough enough but with a pandemic occurring around us, it only makes it more difficult. The targeted audience would be college students and educators. It's crucial now more than ever that educators provide students with resources, support, and structures to help them address the challenges they might be facing. Educators need to help students overcome the challenges. McMullin’s “The Journey to College in the Age of COVID” and Morris’ “Helping College Students Cope With COVID-19” are texts that could support our conversation

This thread is addressing how various social aspects of wanting to belong, alienate targeted minorities. For instance in Pham’s “Beach Cruiser…” the social dominance theory is further emphasizing the discrimination towards female and first year students. The mention of Nathan’s suggesting how ritual intensifies a bond, can be interpreted within Pham’s local setting of Davis’ biking community. The hate towards minority students (female/first years students) is bonding those being the instigator, and alienating the victim target, which in this case are majorly female students. The audience that can be addressed is the Student Community Center, because they use the insight of how these rituals being perpetuated are creating rifts in having an overall a supportive college culture.

This thread talks about how college students could get familiar with going digital to help make the transition into college a little smoother, especially in the age of covid. This thread is promising because of all the shifting perspectives about going digital. Some sources that could help explore this further include Miller and Schulz, Pham, and Morris. One potential target audience could be to the incoming first years because helping them navigate their first year digitally can help.
