Explore the Social Studies online resources (found under the Web Resources menu item) and select one web resource that you found especially helpful to you. In addition to the resources that we have provided for you, please share another web resource that you have found on your own that you feel is especially helpful. For both websites, you should provide the title of the website(s), the address of the website(s) and a few sentences explaining how you would use these website(s) in your classroom.

First of all, it is always fun to have anything with content fall within the ABC's, giving some literacy integration. Along with the ABC's there are several activities, with worksheets and instructions that go along with Michigan history and could be easily modified for several different grade levels.

It does not have predetermined years or events, the students choose what to research and what is included. I think this would be an excellent way to keep a running record of the year. It would give the students ownership and would allow them to have more interest in their education. Also, given the responsibility of choosing what is included will require additional research and will help to solidify the dates which can be the most difficult (at least for me) part. While this could also just pertain to history, it could be used while teaching diversity and citizenship and other topics. (Dieterly)

This You Tube channel is helpful for teachers to brush up on their social studies skills. The videos include information about social studies, but there are also teaching tips. The information seems like it would be more useful for high school students, and the videos are very fast lectures, often exceeding the 10 minute mark. However, for a teacher who wants to brush up on Social Studies skills at any level, this channel is informative, and is put on by a former high school teacher. If I had taught in a middle school classroom, I could use these videos to show kids a lot of information in a little time as a starter to a lesson or a supplement. Otherwise, I will likely use them to keep myself apprised of social studies information and teaching tips. (Cyrena Johnson)

This web site has information about all 50 states. The information spans from local news to historical information. There is information about colleges and state birds. The site is vast, but is well-organized. We could use this in our classroom for students to be able to look up information about the states. It is a quick reference if someone wanted to know the capital or state bird, or even a state nickname or where it came from. I would use this as an initial research point for my students.

This could be a good website to use while studying Native Americans! They are located in Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Reservation in Northern Wisconsin. They want to bring news and information from Indigenous Nations to the public. This would be a fun site to explore and share articles for current events in the classroom! This is one resource used in my Native American Studies class from NMU. (Anderson)

This website is awesome! I really like this one. It shows a location on a map and then right next to it is the picture of the real place! I think this is a great concept for students to grasp. It offers a Spanish version too! The only issue is that it costs a TON of money. A good place to get ideas then modify them to fit your needs! For example, something that just popped into my head, how fun would it be to find a place on Google Earth and then find it on a map?! COOL and CHEAP! :) (Anderson)
