This is done by rearranging the files stored on a disk so that they occupy contiguous storage areas. These changes will minimize head travel, so the time taken to read and write to files will be reduced.

If a system doesn't use a HDD, and instead uses an SSD then the software will have no effect because of the way Windows Disk Defragmenter increases speed.

- Increases general access speed.
- Rearranges files on the disk.
- Ensure data occupies a contiguous area on the disk drive.

If the fragmentation percentage is above 5%, it is recommended to defragment the hard drive.
