As telehealth technologies continue to be implemented there is a greater opportunity for nursing research. This research will help health care providers notice gaps in care as well as the overall impact of telehealth on patient health care outcomes. 
Health care facilities implementing telehealth technologies should strive to maintain the provider-patient relationship. Providers may use more video conferencing techniques for patient treatment and schedule regular in-clinic appointments to discuss treatment options. 
Reimbursement should also be discussed when considering the future of telehealth technologies. The reimbursement plans currently in place for telehealth services are creating a market for the treatment of chronic illnesses.

Telehealth comes in many different outlets such as: video conferencing, telephone conferencing, and remote monitoring. Telehealth technologies will continue to be created and evolve to impact health care. As the overall patient population ages, there is an increase in the treatment of patients with chronic disease, and this increase has also led to an increase in health care costs. Telehealth provides a way to fill the gap in health care coverage for these patients and patients in remote locations (Bala, 2017).
Telehealth services have greatly been integrated into the daily workflow of health care providers and are becoming embedded in the everyday lives of patients while continuing to abide by HIPAA privacy and security regulations. Telehealth technologies are impacting health care by allowing patients to become more involved in their health care decisions. These technologies allow monitoring to be provided in a closer clinical location and even in the home setting. These technologies now include outlets for telemental health, telerehabilitation services, and even telestroke monitoring. Initially, telehealth services were implemented in rural areas where certain health care services are not available. Now, these services are expanding past simple communication techniques to include telemonitoring, telemental health,  and telestroke. These new telehealth technologies allow health care providers the opportunity to reach a wider patient population while providing pertinent patient care. As teleheatlh technology expands, there is the potential for the technology to impact the overall field of health care informatics and the future of health care in its entirety.  Although telehealth seems like a reasonably new technology, this concept was first introduced in the 1960s due to the needs of NASA. More recently though, in 2010, President Obama made a proposal called Connecting America: The National Broadband Plan. The goal of this plan was to provide better access to broadband-powered Internet services, thus eliminating many of the previous barriers to telehealth such as: financing, regulations, and technological challenges. Other leaders in the improvement of telehealth services include the Kaiser Foundation, who in the 1970s, created a remote health care monitoring system after partnering with the Lockheed Missiles and Space Company (Gruessner, 2015). Obviously, the health care system and the accompanied technologies have gone through many changes over the years and will continue to advance.
