High School Lesson Plan Review

In what ways did the selected Mindsets and/or Behaviors match the lesson topic? List one additional Mindsets and/or Behaviors that you would have selected for the lesson and why.

The mindsets and behaviors matched the emotional portion of the topic. I would also add a social component to identify and solve issues between students and their classmates and teachers.

In what ways do the ASCA Student Standards Pre- and Post-Assessment Items align and not align with the Mindsets and/or Behaviors and topic?

The pre and post-assessment items somewhat matched the mindsets behaviors and topics. It is important to identify our feelings, however, there could have been more of an investigation about why the disciplinary issues were occurring instead of assuming the cause.

Did the lesson content/materials match the selected Mindsets and/or Behaviors skill? Why or why not?

It did in a way, however the "feelings wheel" and video about feelings might cater more toward younger kids than high schoolers. I've found that they want to express themselves more than on paper and by being taught. They want to have a voice, especially when it comes to disciplinary issues.

Timing can be important for delivering lessons and holding small group sessions. Yet, timing can also be limited for school counselors when it comes to working with students. Based on your opinion, how do you think that timing may have impacted the results of the lesson?

I believe that the time of the lesson was too short and at the incorrect time. It is being held in the last period of the day, which means they could be checked out mentally and ready to go home. I would have done multiple 30-minute lessons over a week. This way, students would be exposed for various days to a short lesson that might be more impactful. A late 30-minute lesson for one day would probably go in one ear and out the other and not provide results.

School counselors often share lesson plans with each other when they might experience similar student challenges or topics. But schools, populations, cultures, developmental levels, and counselors are unique. What are some ways you would modify the lesson plan to align with your creativity, knowledge of the ASCA National Model, and skillset?

I would add empathy as an additional behavior. Empathy allows students to understand and share the feelings of their peers, which can lead to more effective and supportive group dynamics. This is particularly important in classrooms where understanding different perspectives can enhance collaboration and reduce conflicts and problems with behavior. In turn, the number of discipline referrals would be reduced as well.

Core Beliefs & Mission Statement:

I believe that all students deserve access to the same opportunities regardless of their background and if given the chance they can reach their goals based on their talents and dreams. They can reach their full potential if given the proper environment and tools needed to grow.

A school counselor is an advocate for student success and their well-being. Their goal is to see the student become the best version of themselves academically and in their professional endeavors. A popular quote by Albert Einstein states “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, It will live Its whole life believing that It is stupid.” School counselors should help students discover who they truly are and how they can support society in their own way.

According to the Likert scale I would give myself a higher score when it comes to cultural competence and interpersonal skills. It suprised me how much I can identify these interpersonal skills and how much I have grown since moving from my mainly conservative hometown. They are biased against many people, and I have turned against those views complpetely. I am confident and experienced in working with people from many different backgrounds and tend to receive positive feedback when it comes to communication. I would give myself a four in these areas because there is always room to improve, and I have not been working with students for very long. In situations such as crisis intervention. I would give myself a one or two. I would benefit from guidance when it comes to difficult situations. For data management, academic standards, and ethical and legal guidelines, I would give myself a three. I understand these concepts, however I have room for growth when it comes to the specifics of school counseling. I also understand that I cannot let my empathy get in the way of becoming too personally involved in student’s lives and situations.

The purpose of this lesson plan is to remind students that bullying can be harmful, and that it is best to be kind and complement each other instead. It should be a fun team building activity that introduces all types of students to one another. It might be challenging to implement this in the high school just because of certain biases that already exist, and the fact that teenagers tend to have difficulty stepping out of their comfort zone.
