Life through the eyes of Edmund Rice

The Holy Edmund Ignatius Rice, was a Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist.

Edmund was the founder of two religious institutes: The Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers. Rice was born on the 1st of June, 1762 in the town of Westcourt near the village of Callan in County Kilkenny in Ireland. He was born into wealthy farming family with 7 brothers and 2 step-sisters. When Edmund was a young man he moved to the busy city port of Waterford and became a very successful businessman as he was extremely talented and grew to be very wealthy. Edmund married Marry Elliot, but unfortunately she passed giving birth to their daughter. His daughter was born premature and handicapped. During this time of loss and mourning his relationship with God grew very strong. He turned to his faith and became incredibly connected with scriptures and the parables of Jesus. Edmunds eyes were "opened" and in his own brokenness he was moved with empathy to notice those who were suffering from brokenness around him.

Living conditions and social structure

Ireland in the early 1800s was very overcrowded and many lived in poverty with social structures strongly abused the majority of the population. It was a very unjust place at the time, so Rice used most of his wealth to ensure a school for boys in poverty was set up. Free education was given to these young men and boys. His aim was to promote an education that recognised the dignity of each individual. He sought to liberate them from their ignorance of God and of their Catholic faith, while at the same time empowering them with an education which would enable them to rise from poverty and the sense of hopelessness. Unfortunately, Ireland at the time was under penal Laws which prevented any Catholic from owning any land over a certain value. The Penal Law also prevented Catholics from attending mass and receiving any education. During the time when Edmund was ensuring those in poverty received an education, these laws were relaxed, and luckily, in 1829 the laws were dropped.

When Edmund was recovering from the loss of his wife, he turned to his faith, he decided to start living according to the teachings of Jesus. He felt as though he had a religious commitment to Christ and was 'called to serve'. Edmund considered to follow the religious life of the priests and brothers. Edmund started reading scriptures more and focused on the ones which involved the poor and needy. Edmund became aware that he was lucky to have receive a Catholic education and wished to provide one for people who couldn't afford it and those in poverty. Edmund was also influenced and inspired by the work of Nano Nagle, a Presentation Sister who helped to educate and teach skills to poor women. The example of the sisters made Edmund determined to do something to help the boys.

Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

I believe that this miracle story connects with the kingly actions of Edmund, as they both include providing something for a number of people. Jesus feeds 5,000 people with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish, Edmund gave the boys in poverty an education with 1 school and 2 teachers plus himself. Edmund had a strong belief that his outcome would be successful, like jesus said, and fortunately it turned out to be that his school helped hundreds.

Dear Jesus,
help me to spread thy fragrance everywhere I go. Flood thy soul with thy spirit and love. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of thine. Shine through me and so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel thy presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus. Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, to shine as to be a light to others, Amen.

Justification for prayer:
This prayer inspired by Edmund is used as a prayer for spreading the warmth and love of God through oneself to their neighbour. A neighbour can be anybody, not necessarily your neighbour next door, or a friend, but a complete stranger in need; in this instance the poor for Edmund and the dying man for the Good Samaritan.

Edmund Rice had a significant impact on society because of his organisation and what he believed in. So many people were impacted by his achievement that they became willing to follow his ways. In 1835 a community of brothers were established in Gibraltar, they began moving around to countries like Australia, New Zealand, America, South Africa, Ireland, and Newfoundland. Although Edmund died in 1844, his legacy has lived on for over 2000 years and will keep doing so. Many are inspired by Edmund and many schools around the world have been named after him and his success. Also, Edmund has inspired thousands of brothers spread across 28 different countries. His organisation since the 1800s has changed many lives, it provides free education, food, clothing and is still remembered today as a leader and role model to a large number as his organisation provided magnificent things for the people in poverty and who are poor.
