This quote is speaking in both terms of both literally and metaphorically. The light is literally coming from the windows open blinds. When a new patient dies, the blinds shut. The light is being blocked out by the blinds. The closing down of the blinds is also symbolic to how a body closes down when it is reaching it's last moments of life. The light is a metaphor for life. When we die, we can either say the lights went out or we can say the person saw the light. There are many metaphors between light and life. These are two examples out of many.

“They were equal in every which way”(Kurt Vonnegut)
In this future everyone is equal and a lot of people have handicaps. Like weights, mask, and headsets for the ears.
“It was the Golden Age of Equality”
They believed because of all the handicaps that everyone was equal. They believed that 2081 was the time that everyone was the most equal and that everything was perfect just the way it was.
