This society that the novel takes place in is clearly a dystopia and this chapter perfectly sets up how. Everything is presented as amazing and pure as humans are grown in bottles, when in reality, that couldn't be further from the truth. In order to prevent a social uprising towards the totalitarian dictators of the World State, some humans are nearly drowned in alcohol in order to give them various mental defects. Along with this, the only people who really "make it" in society are the ones chosen by the higher-ups. Overall, chapter 1 does a very good job at setting up this dystopia and how totalitarianism has affected it.

In this chapter, we learn about how of a dystopia the World State really is. Underneath this mask of happy times and scientific genius lies a dark truth. The World State does horrific things to infants in order to achieve their goal of absolute economic stability. "The screaming of the babies suddenly changed its tone. There was something desperate, almost insane, about that sharp spasmodic yelps to which they now gave utterance. Their little bodies twitched and stiffened; their limbs moved jerkily as if to the tug of unseen wires." (Pg. 21) This all happens as the babies are horrifically shocked and conditioned to hate anything relating to nature or literature. Truly horrifying! Nothing about this place screams "utopia" to me, it mostly screams... well, actual screams. From babies.

"They’ll grow up with what the psychologists used to call an ‘instinctive’ hatred of books and flowers. They’ll be safe from books and botany all

their lives.” (pg 22).

The biggest reason why they program to be this because if they read books. They will become smarter and will uplift society and government. If they like flowers, they will consume transportation BUT they will not spend anything else because looking at flowers doesn't cost anything. Directors want humans in this society to consume a lot of services in the community. That why they program to like sports. "But simultaneously we condition them to love all country sports. At the same time, we see to it that all country sports shall entail the use of elaborate apparatus. So that they consume manufactured articles as well as transport." (pg 23). Because sports will require them equipment and transportation. MORE MONEY!

We are guided through a nursery where we see how they condition the children to conform to their ideals. They found the best way to instill these ideas, "Books and loud noises, flowers, and electric shocks already in the infant mind these couples were uncompromisingly linked; and after two hundred repetitions of the same or similar lesson would be wedded indissolubly." (p. 21-22)

Children are partaking in "erotic play" which goes completely against our beliefs and is a keen example of how in this book they were able to control and change whatever they want. During this, the Director makes a statement that further shows how the controllers are in charge of everything, "Imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption. It's madness. nowadays the Controllers won't approve of any new game unless it can be shown that it requires at least as much apparatus as the most complicated of existing games."

This chapter is part of chapter 3. We learn a lot about casual sex in this world. "But every one belongs to every one else,” he concluded, citing the hypnopædic proverb" (pg 40). The kids learn to play with each other naked freely. This play teaches them the ideal that everyone belongs to everyone else. Then we got introduced to Lenina. A girl that is unusual (to this world standard) only has sex with one man that is Henry Foster. Her friend Fanny, consistently advises her to have sex with other men because what she did is unusual D.H.C will not be happy to know this. But at your age, Lenina! No, it really won’t do. And you know how strongly the D.H.C. objects to anything intense or long drawn. Four months of Henry Foster, without having another man–why, he’d be furious if he knew …” (pg 41).

When the Controller is talking to the students about our (old) world. Like we rarely have sex and it is a taboo to us. One of the students said. “I once had to wait nearly four weeks before a girl I wanted would let me have her.” “And you felt a strong emotion in consequence?” “Horrible!” (pg 45).

All this shows that humans in this world are not very happy even though they live in perfect "society". No one has the freedom to be happy however they want. They always need an event to happen everyday to give them joys. If not have sex then work or sports.

Well. This chapter certainly starts off... interestingly. Proof if proof be needed that the World State is a dystopia, small children are running around naked participating in "erotic play." While gross, it also proves that the World State's morals are completely skewed from the morals of today's society. The children's playtime also showcases totalitarianism. The only reason the children are doing this is so that the World State can teach them from an early age that sex is a very casual thing that happens in this world and that they need to do it casually and not with the same partner for a while in order to be considered "normal." Totalitarianism is in effect here because this is something that the Controller is having everyone do from his rule.

Totalitarianism has destroyed our culture in this novel. The totalitarian dictators have done so much conditioning that they have wiped out what makes humans... humans. This part of Chapter 3 also depicts this place as a dystopia by depicting the treatment of Bernard Marx as someone who just so happens to be short. He's absolutely ridiculed despite being an alpha for his height. He's the biggest outcast of anyone, and that's very sad.

The government's involvement in this world is more subtle now, but it is still very much in effect. At one point in the chapter, Benito Hoover tries to help out Bernard by giving him government-assigned drugs. "'But, I say,' he went on, 'you look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma.'" (Pg. 60) Instead of trying to help out Bernard the way we would encourage somebody now, Benito just goes with what the government has taught him is right and tries to give Bernard drugs to keep him happy. Along with this, we learn the aftermath of what happens after a baby in this world is conditioned through interactions had by Lenina and Henry about the khaki-wearing Deltas. "'What a hideous colour khaki is,' remarked Lenina, voicing the hypnopaedic prejudices of her caste." The woman has been conditioned to hate those lower than her ever since she was a baby, so it is no wonder why she feels this way now.

In this chapter, we learn more about how people in this society act. Lenina didn’t want Fanny and other people weird out because she only hung out with Henry Foster. In society, everyone belongs to everyone else. So she still follows the society norm even though that is not what she likes. “She was a popular girl and, at one time or another, had spent a night with almost all of them (pg 57)”

Also in this society people are always doing something and rarely or even never appreciate what they have. “Bernard Marx drew a deep breath. He looked up into the sky and round the blue horizon and finally down into Lenina’s face. “Isn’t it beautiful!” His voice trembled a little. She smiled at him with an expression of the most sympathetic understanding. “Simply perfect for Obstacle Golf,” she answered rapturously” (pg 59). This shows that Bernard is the person so far appreciating what he owns and things around him. People like Lenina have been brainwashed by the government and have been programmed to always be in action to do something.

Because “Every one belongs to everyone else, after all.” (pg 47) Because of this Fanny and Lenina have an argument about how weird Lenina acts. “You’re hopeless, Lenina, I give you up.” (pg 48). This is a truly crazy concept to us because society didn’t make it so people could have sex with each other if they wanted. Lenina didn’t have her own freedom to enjoy what she truly wanted to do. Because everyone is perfect, Bernard needs to suffer because of how perfect he is. We see Bernard act like a jerk because he didn’t have a tall Alpha. “Indeed, a faint hypnopædic prejudice in favor of size was universal.” (pg 65). Bernard is Alpha but people didn’t see him as his class just because he was too short for Alpha. “Each time he found himself looking on the level, instead of downward, into a Delta’s face, he felt humiliated. Would the creature treat him with respect due to his caste?” (pg 64). People in this world get judged by their looks rather than who they are.

She has a flashback in this chapter about the things she was conditioned to believe. "Lenina suddenly remembered an occasion when, as a little girl at school, she had woken up in the middle of the night and become aware, for the first time, of the whispering that had haunted all her sleeps. She saw again the beam of moonlight, the row of small white beds; heard once more the soft, soft voice that said (the words were there, unforgotten, unforgettable after so many night-long repetitions): 'Every one works for every one else. We can't do without any one. Even Episilons are useful. We couldn't do without Epsilons. Every one works for every one else. We can't do without any one...'" (Pg. 74) Lengthy as it may be, this quote gives us a great explanation as to how the totalitarian dictators of this society sort of brainwash the residents of the World State. They cause control their thoughts and become less of individuals as time progresses.

Well. What a chapter. For the most part, there's only one major event in this chapter, and that event is, for lack of a better word, a huge orgy. This is a thematic orgy, however. The totalitarian dictators of the World State have organized these orgies as a way to keep the residents of the World State in check. We can see an example of the success of this practice from a conversation Bernard has with Fifi Bradlaugh after the fact. "'Wasn't it wonderful?' said Fifi Bradlaugh. "Wasn't it simply wonderful?' She looked at Bernard with an expression of rapture, but of rapture in which there was no trace of agitation or exicitement--for to be excited is still to be unsatisfied. Hers was the calm ecstasy of achieved consumation, the peace, not of mere vacant satiety and nothingness, but of balanced life, of energies at rest and in equilibrium. A rich and living peace." (Pg. 85) Fifi has become a more relaxed person due to this event. She has been more stripped of her individualism than before thanks to the World State's practices.

This shows how extremely heavy they have been conditioning. To brainwash them away to happiness. Even the lower class can’t escape conditioning. “And if you were an Epsilon,” said Henry, “your conditioning would have made you no less thankful that you weren’t a Beta or an Alpha.” (pg 74).

Then when Henry and Lenina are having a nice date they are still not free from the brainwashing.

Two very important things happen across these two parts. For one thing, Bernard finally expresses his true thoughts to Lenina... those thoughts being that he has thoughts at all. This is a horrible thing to do in this dystopia, as you are not allowed to be your own individual person under any cirumstance. The real kicker, though, is what happens in part 2 of chapter 6. The Director, also known as Bernard's boss, starts quoting the past, which is an extremely bad thing to do in this society. "'Twenty years, I suppose. Nearer twenty-five. I must have been your age...' He sighed and shook his head. Bernard felt extremely uncomfortable. A man so conventional, so scrupulously correct as the Director-- and to commit so gross a solecism!" (Pg. 96) The fact that Bernard is even so worried about the Director taking him back to the past like this is a perfect example of how the World State is a dystopia. You can't even do this basic human function without being judged.

Bernard has finally done it. He has expressed to Lenina his desire to become an individual! Lenina finds this notion preposterous, however, and doesn't understand why Bernard doesn't feel free. "'How can I?' he repeated meditatively. "No, the real problem is: How is it that I can't, or rather--because, after all, I know quite well why I can't--what would it be like if I could, if I were free--not enslaved by my conditioning." Bernard is exploring his individualism and becoming more of a person than he could ever be before.

We learn what happens to the Savages in the Savage Reservation in this chapter. As it turns out, the Savages are quite encased in their cells, not able to leave under any circumstance. "'No escape' repeated the Warden, waving him back into his chair; and as the permit was not yet countersigned, Bernard had no choice but to obey. "Those who are born in the Reservation--and remember, my dear young lady, he added, leering obscenely at Lenina, and speaking in an improper whisper, "remember that, in the Reservation, children still are born, yes, actually born, revolting as that may seem...' (He hoped that this reference to a shameful subject would make Lenina blush; but she only smiled with simulated intelligence and said, 'You don't say so!' Disappointed, the Warden began again.) "Those, I repeat, who are born in the Reservation are destined to die there." (Pg. 102) The Warden is describing to Bernard and Lenina that there is no real way to leave this place as a Savage. This place isn't a utopia for these Savages, it's the exact opposite!

I suppose Lenina takes a bit too much soma based on the totalitarian dictators' ideologies of what should make you happy and passes out. "As soon as they got back to the rest-house, she swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunar eternity." In his report about John the Savage to Mond, Bernard begins to make suggestions to the Controller about some of John's ideas about civilized infantility, and this angers Mond severely. "Mustapha Mond's anger gave place almost at once to mirth. The idea of this creature solemnly lecturing him--him--about the social order was really too grotesque. The man must have gone mad. 'I ought to give him a lesson,' he said to himself..." (Pg. 159) Mond is so self-centered that this idea of Bernard even attempting to give him any sort of advice is preposterous to him. This is the man who has total power over the World State, too, so he is a walking example of the problems with totalitarian ideologies as well.

It just reminds him about negative memories about Popé and village children calling him. “Sitting beside her, the Savage tried hard to recapture his mood of a few minutes before. “A, B, C, vitamin D,” he repeated to himself, as though the words were a spell that
would restore the dead past to life. But the spell was ineffective. Obstinately the beautiful memories refused to rise; there
was only a hateful resurrection of jealousies and uglinesses and miseries. Popé with the blood trickling down from his cut shoulder; and Linda hideously asleep, and the flies buzzing round the spilt mescal on the floor beside the bed; and the boys calling those names as she passed.” (pg 203)
The final hit to him that saw his mom dead in front of him. “The look she gave him was charged with an unspeakable terror–with terror and, it seemed to him, reproach.
She tried to raise herself in bed, but fell back on to the pillows. Her face was horribly distorted, her lips blue. (pg 205)

In this chapter, we get another scene with the World Controller and our eyes are opened to one crazy fact: not even Mustapha Mond can be fully satisfied with this dystopia. He is forced to deny the publication of a piece of literature that he finds genuinely exciting because it could cause people to think too much. "'What fun it would be,' he thought, 'if one didn't have to think about happiness!'" (Pg. 177) Through this quote, we finally find out that not even Mond himself can be satisfied with the way this world works.

When Henry Foster learns that Lenina does not want to do any of the things that she usually wants to do, he immediately thinks of what this dystopia would suggest: seeing a doctor for this seemingly regular event. "'Anyhow, you ought to go and see the doctor,' said Henry. 'A doctor a day keeps the jim-jams away,' he added heartily, driving home his hypnopaedic adage with a clap on the shoulder." (Pg. 186-187) The fact that there is a dedicated saying as to needing to see a doctor every day is enough proof of this society's ideals.

Linda is in the hospital and John watches as a group of children stare at her and call her names. In response to John's obviously valid response of anger, the nurse gives him this response: "'Disgraceful? But what do you mean? They're being death-conditioned. And I tell you,' she warned him truculently, "if I have any more of your interference with their conditioning, I'll send for the porters and have you thrown out.'" (Pg. 203) The conditioning of the children, to this nurse, is more important than the emotions of a man whose mother is dying in front of him.

We’ve sacrificed the high art. We have the feelies and the scent or- gan instead.” (pg 220)”

John challenges the idea of unlimited happiness in this chapter. He and Mustapha Mond, after Helmholtz leaves, have a debate about how the absence of religion has affected the World State. The Savage argues that unhappiness is important in a true utopia. "'You got rid of them. Yes, that's just like you. Getting rid of everything unpleasant instead of learning to put up with it. Whether 'tis better in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing end them... but you didn't do either. Neither suffer nor oppose. You just abolish the slings and arrows. It's too easy.'" (Pg. 238) John has had it with this ridiculous idea that the World State is a good society just because everyone is happy. Life is too easy now, and John realizes that.

So, as evidenced in this chapter and in Chapter 16, Mustapha Mond is much more of an individual than the rest of the world state. He knows good books, he knows about religion, and he's allowed to consider the past. The Savage even brings this point up at the very beginning of the chapter. "'Art, science--you seem to have paid a fairly high price for your happiness,' said the Savage, when they were alone." (Pg. 230) John identifies that the Controller was an invidiual at one point, a very dignified and sophisticated person, but eventually gave all that up in order to rule the World State. He's no longer his own person.

The one main point for cost happiness in this chapter I can see is religion. People in the World State sacrifice religion, another part of the high art. “ART, SCIENCE–you seem to have paid a fairly high price for your happiness,” said Savage, when they were alone. “Anything else?” “Well, religion, of course,” replied the Controller.” (pg 230). The biggest reason why they sacrifice is because people are always happy and never suffer, sadness, or any negative emotions at all. So the role of God who helps them better is unnecessary. If they didn’t feel good. There are soma that can solve every problem.

It helped him purify himself from civilization. “The Savage nodded. “I ate civilization.” “It poisoned me; I was defiled. And then,” he added, in a lower tone, “I ate my own wickedness.”” (pg 241). But the cost is that he is extremely not feeling good at all.

The next cost of happiness is when Bernard and Helmholtz say goodbye to John and ask if he will go with them. But the Controller doesn't want him to go at all. He wants to experiment on John and see how he reaches civilization. ““He said he wanted to go on with the experiment. But I’m damned,” the Savage added, with sudden fury, “I’m damned if I’ll go on being experimented with. Not for all the Controllers in the world. l shall go away to-morrow too.”” (pg 243). Because of this he needs to go somewhere that he can be alone. ““The Savage shrugged his shoulders. “Anywhere. I don’t care. So long as I can be alone.”” (pg 243)

Near the beginning of his expedition, he considers living in a nearby lighthouse, only to think about his experiences in the World State. "But who was he to be pampered with the daily and hourly sight of loveliness? Who was he to be living in the visible presence of God? All he deserved to live in was some filthy sty, some blind hole in the ground." At one point in this chapter, the world-famous director Darwin Bonaparte secretly films John beating himself with a whip to show to the totalitarian society.
