플라스틱의 특징
1. 강도와 경도
플라스틱은 단단하고, 질기고, 부드럽고, 유연하게 만들 수 있기 때문에 금속 제품으로 만드는 것같다 가공비가 저렴하며, 우리 생활에 필요한 여러 가지 물품을 만드는 데 이용된다. 종류에 따라서는 금속 이상의 강도를 가지기도 한다.
 
 
 2. 비중

플라스틱은 금속이나 유리에 비하여 가볍다. 플라스틱의 비중은 일반적으로 0.9 ~ 1.6 정도의 것이 가장 많다.

3. 단열성
열을 차단하는 성질이 우수하여 건축물의 단열재 또는 아이스박스에 이용된다.

4. 전기 절연성
플라스틱은 전기를 잘 전달하지 않는다. 대부분의 플라스틱은 전기 절연성이 좋아 전기를 잘 전달하지 않으며, 고주파 전기에도 우수한 저항성을 나타낸다. 또한, 전도성 물질을 적당히 혼합하여 전도성이 나타나도록 할 수 있으며, 필요에 따라 전기 절연성도 조절할 수 있으므로 전기 재료에 많이 이용된다.

5. 광학적 성질
빛을 잘 통과시키는 투광성이 우수하여 유리와 똑같은 용도로 이용할 수 있으며, 희망에 따라 투명도가 높은 것, 표면 광택이 좋은 것을 선택할 수 있다. 또한, 착색이 자유로워 아름다운 제품을 만들 수 있다.

6. 화학적 안정성
화학 약품에 안정적이어서 각종 화학 물질의 보관 용기 재료로 이용된다.

7. 탄성
플라스틱에는 수십 ~ 수백%까지 큰 탄성을 가지고 있는 것이 있어, 고무 공업용 재료로 사용할 수 있다.

8. 충격 흡수성
