Forcing Society to be Anxious

The Invisible Illness, anxiety, is common in today’s society but it is usually overlooked. The novel Fahrenheit 451 portrays how common this illness is and how it is embedded into society. Many characters show clear signs of anxiety, but the focus lies on Montag. Montag, the protagonist, carries anxiety throughout the story. The readers see this when Montag says,”’Jesus God,’ said Montag. ‘Every hour so many damn things in the sky! How in hell did those bombers get up there every single second of their lives!’” (Bradbury 69). Bradbury uses dysphemism and is explicit to emphasize how the government is putting society in constant fear. In today's society, when people are put in a situation and are surrounded by constant fear, it takes a negative toll on your mental health. Even though this was written many years ago, today's society faces the same struggle with this invisible illness. The author chooses to write the novel in a very explicit way. Many situations that cause grief and devastation are talked about in a normal way, as if the horrid acts were right in any sense. We see that when it says, “‘We burned a thousand books. We burned a woman’” (Bradbury 47). In today's society, most things are very blunt, but we are very used to bad events occurring. Events like shootings, murders, and rape are more common than anyone would want them to be, and trauma affects people in many ways. One of those ways is anxiety. Many people are affected by traumatic events, just like the characters in Fahrenheit 451.

Today’s society experiences anxiety in some of the same ways the society of Fahrenheit 451 does. Although written in the 1950’s, our society in the 2000’s is experiencing the same problems, that go unnoticed. Most of the characters in Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, show many signs of an anxiety disorder. That where we see how similar our societies are to each other. Research says, “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population every year”(Facts). Although this disorder is one of the most common, some of the characters never discuss the fact, or any treatment they may be receiving. Today’s Americans are the same way. Ignoring anxiety disorders is very common. There have been many surveys and studies done to support this claim. Resource says, “Approximately 30 percent - as many people don't seek help, are misdiagnosed, or don't know they have issues with anxiety”(Folk). Facts show that it is so common, but why? Reliable sources say that environment and
surroundings play a key role in anxiety. An element like stress is a huge factor, whether it comes from one's job, relationships, or financial problems (Felman). Another source says, “Sixty-eight percent of respondents said “keeping myself or my family safe” and “my health” made them either somewhat or extremely anxious. Sixty-seven percent said the same of “paying my bills or expenses.” Politics and interpersonal relationships followed at 56% and 48%, respectively”(Ducharme). Admitting to have this disorder is not easy, so most try and hide it by going on with this disorder. A girl explained her personal experiences with anxiety in the Ted Talk I chose, and it shows how these statistics are real and affecting people(Talks). All of this research shows why, and how it is making its way into peoples lives.

Anxiety is a huge factor in Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, we are shown signs and effects of characters having an anxiety disorder. Although the author never comes out and tells us they have anxiety disorders, the reader can infer by critically reading the novel. Different behaviors are shown that lead the reader to believe that the characters may be suffering from anxiety. We are shown this when Bradbury writes, “He screamed. He screamed. He screamed! Blackout. Silence. Darkness. Montag cried out in the silence and turned away”(Bradbury 142). This shows protagonist Montag having an anxiety attack. People deal with anxiety in many ways. One of the ways the characters coped with anxiety was through substance abuse. There are many instances where the characters would take pills and drink alcohol. On of those instances being, “Faber poured two glasses of whiskey.’We’ll need these.’ They drank”(Bradbury 127). That quotes gives off imagery and shows how these people cope with their disorder. All of these signs have a common denominator, anxiety. As I analyzed this novel, this message popped out more than any idea portrayed in the story.

We are similar to the society of Fahrenheit 451 in many ways. One of those ways is anxiety, how its overlooked, and the effects of it. Many of the characters show signs, but why are they all so anxious? Our society is similar in that way. There are many factors and reasons for why this is affecting people. One source says that the government standards like finances, have a huge affect on our anxiety (Newman). Everyone reacts to situations differently, therefore everyone’s symptoms of anxiety can be different. A source shows warning signs like tolerance, lack of control, reductions in other activities, and continuance (Pritchard).Research also shows that, “Having a sense of impending danger, trembling, feeling nervous, and rapid breathing” are all symptoms (Anxiety). With all of these different symptoms, anxiety can grow from different sources.Meaning that different situations can affect your anxiety in different ways. A source said, “Respondents were asked to rate their anxiety on five different areas: health, safety, finances, relationships and politics”(Americans). That quotes shows us five different sources that could be contributing to our society, and coincidentally Fahrenheit 451’s society. Now that we know why and how it happens, people are still stuck on the question of how can I make it leave? A source says that there are drug therapies and behavioral therapies to help with anxiety, just depending on the severity (Brain). Having knowledge on this topic is what our society needs to make a positive change. A video shows all statistics and percentages of anxiety in our country, and how most go unnoticed (Healthery). Knowledge is key to a positive and functional society.
