From For the Dead and the Living by Elie Wiesel, the author explains how the holocaust was a horrible tragedy and that it was a mistake mankind had made together. While reading this, the reader is aware of the truly horrific things that happened. "In Poland, SS officers used Jewish infants for target practice." After being exposed to the cruel truth that is the Holocaust, the reader can realize that something like this should never happen again.

From Hope, Despair, and Memory, also by Elie Wiesel, the author talks about how remembering the Holocaust is a duty of those who were involved but also of those who were not. The truth being that the Holocaust could have been avoided if being "different" was not such a problem. "We thought it would be enough to tell of the tidal wave of hatred which broke over the Jewish people for men everywhere to decided once and for all to put an end to hatred of anyone who is "different"." This opens the eyes of the reader that if they make fun of or hate someone that is "different" then they are no better than HItler.

In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, Bruno, the son of a Nazi solider, makes friends with a Jewish boy without really knowing that the Holocaust is going on or what it means. This opens the eyes of the reader and tells them that friendship can come out of anywhere and that one should realize that religion or any of the sort should not limit who their friends can and cannot be.
