Ari asks his mom about students who don't care. She responds by saying it's her job to care about them whether they care or not. Ari is bored and wants to go outside, but his mom won't let him yet. She cries and Ari talks about tears, all the tears, from Dante, Ari, his mom. Ari's mom worries that he doesn't have friends, but he doesn't want them and says he has Dante. 
Chapter 4
Ari calls Dante and he comes over to Ari's house. Dante brings his sketch book over and a poetry book. While Ari reads poetry, Dante sketches. Ari falls asleep reading and Dante is gone when he wakes up. Ari muses about why Dante can feel so good about himself. Dante won't share his other drawings with Ari just like Ari won't share his dreams with Dante. 
Chapter 5
Ari's fever returns and so do his disturbing dreams of not being able to get to his brother, his father, and then, Dante. He also sees the sparrows falling from the sky again and he realizes that he is the one killing them. 
Chapter 6
Dante comes over to visit Ari, and Ari is not happy, still he does not want Dante to leave. Ari asks Dante if he is scared of anything since it seems to Ari as if he is not afraid of anything, and Dante says he is, but Ari doesn't ask what.
Chapter 7
"The Fever was gone. But the dreams stayed." Ari is confused by his dreams. Dante goes to a different school and as fall approaches, Ari is not looking forward to going back to his school, but also doesn't want to go to the all boys private school that Dante attends. Ari is changing and growing up and he knows it and feels it. He feels he doesn't fit anywhere and doesn't understand how Dante seems to fit everywhere. Ari is doing a lot of thinking and he realizes he is mad for many reasons. He is lonely and can't talk to anyone so begins to write in his journal. 
Chapter 8
Ari shares some of his frustration about his siblings, the fact that his older sisters are so much older and not around and that his brother is in prison. Dante shares some information about his family and that his extended family does not feel that they are Mexican enough. Against her father's wishes, Dante's mom(Soledad) goes to college and meets Dante's dad so they are both college educated unlike the rest of the family. Dante feels like he doesn't belong anywhere since he is not close to his extended family, but Ari argues that he fits everywhere. And the chapter ends with a question. "When do we start feeling like the world belongs to us?"
Chapter 9
Ari's mom (Liliana) shares how she was in school when Ari's dad was at war and they had him when he came home and she finished school and became a teacher. Ari sees his mom as a person, separate from him, for the first time. He asks about his father, but the mom says, "I don't always have to understand the people I love." 
Chapter 10
Ari writes in his journals about his struggles of growing up, physically and emotionally. He writes that there are no pictures of his brother in the house. He is not allowed to talk about him and Ari says it is like he is dead.
