The sophistication of the DAW, particularly Ableton Live for it's ability to assist in live performance (The Untold Story of Ableton Live—the Program That Transformed Electronic Music Performance Forever, 2016) left me wanting to learn much more.

In addition to the DAW, is the virtual instruments (VSTi), particularly the real-world recorded samples from the likes of Spitfire Audio, SoundIron, Audio Imperia. I found their realism of sound, varied microphone positions, articulation and expression, and playability both mind-blowing and inspiring. These virtual instruments are probably the main driving force behind my direction into orchestral music.

While researching the technology of using DAWs and VST instruments, I came across firstly, several YouTube tutorial channels which coincidently were involved with producing cinematic music. In particular, I found the channels of Guy Michelmore
(https://www.youtube.com/@ThinkSpaceEducation) and Alex Moukala (https://www.youtube.com/@AlexMoukala) most educational and inspiring.

One Alex Moukala video referred to Evenant (https://evenant.com) - an online education site specialising in the practical aspects of cinematic music composition and production. A deep dive into various aspects of this study has been instrumental in building practical knowledge in composing and producing.

Hans Zimmer was the obvious influential artist that came up when I starting looking for examples.

The body of work and the standard of film productions that carried his music is immense, of course, but the thing that really surprised and impressed me was how modern the mostly orchestral music sounded and how he can create very emotional and powerful music productions from a minimalist approach as described in this article (https://diegodelfino.com/blog/score-review-and-analysis/outer-space-minimalism-understanding-hans-zimmers-score-for-interstellar/).

I definitely want to delve deeper into this world of music production.

However, it wasn't until 1977 that SoundStream released their digital editing system, and 1989 when Digidesign Sound Tools that the DAW was born.

Coupled with the release of the MIDI protocol in 1993, and Steinberg's Cubase VST in 1996 (Levine, 2019), professional music production came to the bedroom studios of today.
