Central idea: At the beginning of the poem, Anne was feeling unholy thoughts because of the loss of her very sentimental items. Throughout the poem, she is lost in self pity, and wondering why it is happening to her. She starts to realize that those items were not everything and that there is more to life than objects you can hold onto. Anne finally accepts God's gift of life, and hopes for treasures in heaven.

Writing style: The poem has a couplet-based rhyme scheme. It has many lines with an inverted syntax, making lines sound "odd".

How it represents Puritan culture: The Puritans were disciplined people, following a precise moral code. The poem shows that the feelings of desire, and lust still affected the Puritans.
