Basic English Sentence Patterns A. When we make simple English sentences, we usually follow the Subject-Verb-Object pattern. 

Steps: 

1. Put the subject and the adjectives such as ‘fat’, ‘thin’ etc. or any words describing the subject at the beginning of the sentence 

2. Put the verb and some adverbs such as ‘often’, ‘usually’ etc. after the subject

 3. Put the object of the verb, the adjectives or other words describing the object and the adverbs describing the verb at the end of the sentence

In the example we just used, the first statement used normal word order. Normal word order occurs when the subject comes before the verb. The subject is the main person or object in a sentence and the verb is the action word. In that sentence, 'I' is the subject and 'hope' is the verb or the action.

Sometimes there are times when you must use inverted word order to communicate the intended idea. Inverted word order occurs when the subject comes after the verb, in between verb parts, or is not included at all.

·         Rarely have I eaten better food.

·         Hardly ever does he come to class on time.

·         Not until a frog develops lungs does it leave the water and live on the land.

·         Hardly ever have there been so many choices for young people entering the work force as there are today.
